1、 Lesson Planning of Grammar Class. Analysis on Teaching Materials:This is a grammar lesson taken from Unit 1 Festivals Around the World from New Senior English for China Students Book 3. It is mainly about the purposes and usages of 10 modal verbs: can and could, may and might, will and would, shall

2、 and should, must and cant. Besides these, I also add some of their negative forms like “mustnt” “neednt” and their purposes. The teaching activities in the textbook are roughly divided into three parts: finding the sentences with modal verbs from the text and speculating their purposes, further und

3、erstanding the purposes of the modal verbs through exercises, and using modal verbs to dialogue in specific situations. Analyses on StudentsWe have 40 high school grade 1 students. The grammatical concept of modal verbs is no stranger to the students. They concentrated on common modal verbs such as

4、can, may, must, should, etc. in ninth grade. However, most students understanding of modal verbs stays in the one-to-one correspondence of Chinese translation. For example: they know can means 可以; may mean 也许; must mean 必须; should mean 应该, but they cant understand that they can mean other things in

5、other situations. Therefore, the study of this lesson can make them understand that modal verbs can express very rich emotions and attitudes such as guessing, blaming, regret, request, permission, surprise, blessing, etc. Besides, students in grade 1 cannot pay attention to grammar learning well in

6、class, which needs me to design some interesting activities to help them concentrate on my lesson. . 11、ic of this unit Festivals Around the World and introduce the lesson content “modal verbs”. Stage 2. Presentation Step1. Introduce the definition of the modal verbActivity: Show three sentences and guide students to definite what the modal verb is. Purpose: Help students review the definition of the

12、modal verb. Step2. Conclude the characteristics of the modal verbsActivity: Show four groups of sentences to students and conclude modal verbs four characteristics.Purpose: Help students conclude modal verbs characteristics or usages so that they will not fell confused about the example sentences in

13、 later steps. Strengthen their ability to conclude information. Step3. Learn the purposes of the common modal verbs Activity: Guess purposes through pictures and sentences by pair work; put the modal verbs into the correct “purpose boxes” in the process of presentation.1. can/could; must: Observe se

14、ntences and guess purposes2. may/might; shall/should: Match the sentences with the purposes (pair work)3. will/would: Fill in the blanks and figure out the purposes Purpose: Make students know the basic usages of these nine modal verbs; learn the purposes of them and distinguish them according to pu

15、rposes. Step4. Summary Activity: Put the “purpose boxes” together and summarize.Purpose: Help students summarize or organize the modal verbs and their purposes. Stage 3. Practice Step1. Analyze the modal verbs in the text (group work)Activity: Find the sentences containing modal verbs in the text an

( group1 analyzes the paragraph1, group2 paragraph2,group3paragraph3, group4paragraph4、5、6 )Purpose: Help students understand the authors purposes in the text to use modal verbs, consolidate the grammar learning and develop their group cooperative ability. Step2. Make

17、 sentencesActivity: Teacher gives students some words and phrases about “who” “what” “where” “when” and asks students to make sentences with modal verbs and these elements. (giving two examples first)Purpose: Let students use modal verbs to make simple sentences and try to embody modal verbs purpose

18、s in this process. Stage 4. Production Step1. Make dialogueActivity: Teacher gives situation 1 and key words, then show the example dialogue to students and asks one student to read dialogue with teacher; gives situation 2 and asks students to make dialogue and show in class.
