1、The present continuous tense You can use the present continuous tense to: talk about things that are happening now, talk about arrangements or plans in the future, describe actions you see in pictures.You use the present continuous tense for actions that are happening now. You use the simple present
2、 tense for actions that happen always, often or every day.THE FORM OF THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSEThe present continuous tense has two parts.the verb be + the main verb + -ing (the present participle)Exercise 1The sentences below are about things that happen every day. Change them to sentences about
3、 things that are happening now. Use the present continuous tense. The first one has been done for you.a) I sleep every day. Im sleeping now. b) I eat every day. _c) You read every day. _d) We study every day. _e) Anne runs every day. _f) Peter lies every day. _g) The students take the bus every day.
4、 _h) John and Sue dance every day _ Using the present continuous tenseWhen you talk about actions that are happening now, you can use these adverbs: at the moment now The adverbs now and at the moment go at the end of the statement.Im doing my homework now.Jane is having dinner at the moment.You oft
5、en use these adverbs when you are making an excuse. A: Peter, please help me do the washing-up! B: Sorry, Im doing my homework right now.The adverb still is different. It goes in front of the -ing verb.Are you still cooking dinner, Mum ?Im still talking to Kevin.When you talk about definite plans or
6、 arrangements in the future, you can also use the present continuous tense.Im meeting Jackie tonight.Were driving to Fan Ling at nine oclock.Uncle Wai is visiting us next Sunday.My parents are coming back from Japan today.Make sure students understand that this use of the present continuous tense re
7、fers to the future. The time adverbs that go with this use (e.g. tonight, at nine oclock, next Sunday) refer to specific times in the near future.When you look at a picture, or watch television, you can use the present continuous tense to describe the action. In this drawing, the woman is playing a
8、guitar and the children are singing.Verbs not usually used in the present continuous tenseMany verbs are not normally used with the present continuous tense. For example:I agree with you.I am in my English class at the moment.John feels happy today.We all hope you feel better,I know what you mean.I
9、like these cakes.She loves me!I see David over there.The children seem sad at the moment.This cake tastes delicious.I want to eat something.Most of these verbs are stative: they describe states or conditions rather than actions or activities. Stative verbs are not normally used in the present contin
10、uous tense (e.g. agree, be, hope, etc.).Some stative verbs (e.g. have, feel, look, etc.) may be used in the present continuous tense withcertain meanings (e.g. Im having dinner with my family right now., Is John feeling better today?, Im looking at David over there.).The present continuous tense wit
