3、 Horatio Nelson was born on 29 September 1758 in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, He was the sixth of the 11 children of a clergyman. He was very weak but had a very strong character. He joined the navy aged 12, on a ship commanded by his uncle. He became a captain at 20, and saw service in the West Indies,

His captains knew what he wanted to do .In 1787 due to some political reasons Nelson was ordered home.But when England entered the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, Nelson was given com

5、mand of the Agamemnon and sent to the Mediterranean Sea. As a result of his great victories against the French army in Egypt Nelson was created Baron Nelson of the Nile. His name became known in Europe. Nelson lost his right arm in an attempt to cut out a ship at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In Naples he

6、 met Sir William Hamilton, the English ambassador, and his charming young wife, Emma. in 1799 she bore him a daughter On 21 October 1805 Nelson started his last battle against the French and Spanish fleet. Admiral, in spite of advice, insisted upon wearing his full uniform into battle, and so he was

7、 badly wounded by a French sniper. He died 50 minutes later as the victory, Thank God I have done my duty were his last words. (The bullet was removed from his body and is now on public display in Windsor Castle),On 9-th of January 1806 he was buried in London in St. Pauls Cathedral. Nelsons Column

8、is a monument in Trafalgar Square in central London built to commemorate a great Victory of Admiral Nelson. The monument was constructed between 1840 and 1843 at a cost of 47,000. It is made from granite and its 44 meters tall . The pedestal is decorated with four bronze relief panels cast from capt

After the battle Nelsons body was placed in a cask of rum to preserve it for the long voyage back to England. Upon arrival, the cask was opened But the rum was almost gone. The

10、 sailors had drilled a small hole at the base of the cask through which they drained most of the rum, thereby drinking of Nelsons Blood. Since then, the term Nelsons Blood has become synonymous with Pussers Rum. Horatio Nelson was a great seaman but he suffered from seasickness all his life. Despite
