41、 were small, a two-story brick building in a complex outside Nashville. My office was dow nstairs. The other two guys worked on the sec ond floor. That day and the days follow ing I sat at my desk liste ning to the profo und sile nee upstairs. The office was un bearably ten se.A stream of shocking r

42、evelations came from my advisers. They compiled paperwork on Tim first. The day I let Tim go I called him into the conference room with Ken and me, laid out the evidence and said, "Tim, we've come to the end of the road here. I know what's bee n happe ning and the compa ny's in real

43、 trouble. I n eed to fire you, effective immediately." Tim did n't say a word except that he n eeded to get some things from his desk. On the way out he surreptitiously tur ned off his computer, effectively lock ing it since only he knew the password. He did n't say goodbye.With the hel

44、p of a computer expert, we got into Tim's computer and discovered the full extent of what he and the COO had been up to. They'd aimed to drain resources and clie nts from my compa ny into a new shadow compa ny they'd created. They inten ded to put me out of bus in ess the n walk away wit

45、h my clie nts. I now had6 / 10eno ugh evide nee to fire the COO. The day I pla nned to let him go, he resig ned. I immediately went to see a lawyer. The lawyer, surprisingly, told me that though I could sue both men successfully, he would n't recomme nd it."It'll eat up years of your li

What had I done to deserve this?I thought back over all our years together, our good times in the office, our celebrati ons whe n we Ian ded a particularly big clie nt.
