1、BUILD AN ACTIVE ORAL ENGLISH CLASS-An explore on oral English teaching Focus: English teaching-oral Class - More and more of our English teachers are becoming puzzled by a dilemma, which comes to our oral English class as a real embarrassing predicament. On the one hand, when students enter Senior1,
2、 they become more and more inactive in oral English classes; on the other hand, greater attention is paid to building the students oral abilities, which is required according to the new curriculum standard . Activities like warming up, speaking, pre-reading and post-reading are all tongue-oriented t
3、asks. All these oral tasks are based on students participation. How to make the students actively take part in your oral class? Here are some tips. First of all, we must make a good teaching plan to make students interested in oral English classes. Interest is the best teacher. When We English teach
4、ers are planning our class-tasks, we should make full use of these four parts given in the textbooks to give students oral trainings. Before our class, we must carefully survey the base of the students English language knowledge and skills, the varieties of their hobbies or tastes, their personal qu
5、alities or their characters. Combine all these with what the textbooks supply and what the students have experienced in their daily life. A good plan for the training, based on your study on the students situations is of great significance in organizing the class discussions and thereafter making an
6、 active atmosphere of English in class, which will certainly increase the students interest in learning English and help build their thought ability, and, thereafter promote their English study.Well begun is half done. Demonstrate what qualities a teacher has in the first lesson. As a rule, the firs
7、t lesson to the new class for a teacher is so important that it will give the students a deep impression and have a great effect I all through the three years. My advice is that we should put all our heart and our love into the first lesson. Remember that the teacher is more than a director or instr
8、uctor in class, but also a participant. Melt yourself into the class, enjoy the class together with the students. Take Unit1, Book1 for example, when talking about friends, introduce yourself as a friend of theirs and promise that you will surely treat all of them as your friends. They will feel rel
9、axed rather than nervous. A good relation between teachers and students will create wonders in teaching. Kill two birds with just one stone. One task must be multi-goaled. Take the warming-up activity in Unit1, Book1 for an example again.Goal1. Encourage the students to speak some English sentences;
10、(With or without teachers help)Goal2. Help the students to revise or learn some useful adjectives used to describe a friend; ( To build their vocabulary)Goal3. Help the students to know each other better and get on well with each other in their future life and study in the new class. (A good atmosph
11、ere of class)Goal4. Learn how to talk about friends or introduce friends. ( A good strategy )Goal5. Spark the students love for English lessons. (A good trend)Start with easier tasks, or make difficult tasks easier for the students, so that the students can experience success in your class, which wi
12、ll surely build up their confidence and therefore encourage them to take part in activities more actively. Make the tasks easier by setting up a bridge to reach to the students understanding, especially in the rural schools where students are not active in class. Suppose this is a stage for the stud
13、ents to step on. When the students are not good enough to do the task, a helpful teacher should do as follows: Give a model so that the students can imitate you. Show them how to get onto the stage, and then let the students to step on your shoulder and reach the stage! Reach a helping hand whenever
14、 necessary to those who are not strong enough and give them a pull. When they fail to get the proper words or expressions, pass them to the students timely so that they can continue and never feel embarrassed. Dont blame the students for their mistakes, or even try to correct them when there are som
15、e! To those who hesitate to open their mouths, whether they do well or not, your encouragement will save him and get their enthusiasm going. Divide it into two or more smaller tasks so that every student can take part in the task and finish his or her share. Just like putting up a flight of stairs t
16、o the stage. There must be students of different English levels. Dont leave those who cant jump onto the stage on the floor. Try to help them get on and cheer together.An open class is favorable to an active class. Teachers must be democratic. Different opinions from the students, whether they are r
17、ight or wrong, should be valued so that we can develop the students aptitudes. Free talks are very helpful to make an oral lesson active. As a matter of fact, there are many open topics both in our textbook and in our students life. Different answers show different aptitudes of the students. Take Qu
18、estion 4 in Unit1, Book1 for an example. Here is the question:Imagine that four people are in an airplane that is going to crash. One is a policeman. One is a doctor, one is a teacher, and one is a scientist. There is only one parachute. Decide who should get the parachute and explain why. Now the s
19、tudents can talk freely, having different choices and different reasons. Here are the possible ones. Student A: I think the doctor should get the parachute. If he dies, no one will treat the patients and more people will die.Student B. I think the teacher should get the parachute, because many stude
20、nts are waiting her to give a lesson.Student C: I think the scientist should get the parachute, because he is the most important man here. He can bring us inventions and discoveries. Student D: I think the policeman should get the parachute, because we need him to protect us from bad men.Even if the
21、y have the same choice, they may give different reasons. So open your arms to welcome students to give their opinions, open your ears to listen to different voices, and open your mind to appreciate every voice. Make your class a melting-pot, boiling instead of a cup of fresh water, becoming frozen w
22、hile you a democrat rather than a dictator! Small treats like a few words of encouragement, small prizes, or a short song contribute greatly to a positive oral class. Dont be sticky to your words of praise; Do be generous! Even we adults like to be flattered or to be commplimented; dont hesitate to bribe a little by investing a little to start a friendship between you and students or never forget to celebrate when the students have done a good job.
