1、Man Students Are More likely to Fail than Woman Students in English Final Examinations浦春莉【Abstract】Byconductingasurvey,thewriterfindsaninterestingphenomenonatHongheUniversityHU.ThenumberofboystudentswhocannotpasstheEnglishfinalexaminationexceedsthenumberofgirls.Whatthereasonsare?Fromtheaspectofgende
2、r,thisthesistriestodiscussthepossiblereasonswhichleadtothespecialphenomenon.IthassomepracticalvaluesbothtoChinesecollegeEnglishteachersandtheboystudents.【Keywords】gender;supplementaryexamination;attitudeEnglishlearningisaverycomplicatedprocess,itinvolvesalotoffactors,especiallythelearnersownfactor.I
3、tisthemostdirectandthemostimportantfactor.Byconductingasurvey,thisthesistriestofigureoutthereasonswhyboystudentsaremorelikelyfailedintheEnglishfinalexamination.TheauthoralwayshastheworkofinvigilatinginthecollegeEnglishsupplementaryexamination.Shefindsthatthenumberofboystudentstakingthesupplementarye
4、xaminationoutnumbersgirlstudents.Itsaveryspecialphenomenon.Whatarethereasonswhichleadtotheuniquesituation?Altogether,thereare255studentsareinterviewedbytheauthor.ThesestudentsarecollegestudentsfromHU.HUislocatedinMengzi,acentralcityofsouthernYunnanProvince.HUisnamedafterthe“Honghewhichmeans“redriver
5、inChinese,aninternationalriverflowingfromDalithrougheightcountiesoftheRedRiverPrefectureofYunnanProvinceallthewaytoVietnamsHanoi.ThepredecessortoHongheUniversityMengziTeachersTrainingSchoolwasestablishedonApril4,1978.ThenamewaschangedtoMengziNormalCollegeonJuly9,1978.OnApril16,2020,theEducationDepar
6、tmentpermittedMengziNormalCollegetomergewiththeHongheBranchoftheYunnanBroadcastingUniversitytoformHongheUniversity,andonSeptember28,2020,HUwasformallyestablished.Mostofthe255studentsaresophomores.Theiragesrangefrom18to22.TheytakeCollegeEnglishIIIastheiroptionalcourse.Afterfinishinglearningthecourse,
7、theywillachievetheextrafouracademicscores.TheauthoristheEnglishteacherofthe255students.Thesestudentsaredividedintothreeclasses.Inthe255students,boystudentsare107.Girlsare148.Inordertofindouthowmanythesestudentshaveexperiencedthesupplementaryexamination,thewriterinterviewsthem.Amongtheboys,the107stud
8、ents,thereare35studentshaveexperiencedthesupplementaryexamination.Instead,only20girlshaveeverexperiencedthesupplementaryexamination.ItisnotdifficulttofindoutthatboysaremorelikelytofailinanEnglishfinalExamination.Thefailedproportionofboysis32.71%.Onthecontrary,girlsproportionis13.51%.Thereisabiggapof
9、thefailedproportionbetweengirlsandboys.Thenextchallengeistofigureoutwhatarethereasonswhichleadtothegreatdifference.endprintSocialfactorsWhenchildrenareborn,theirgenderiscertain.Theyareputtingondifferentclothes,playingdifferenttoys.Theyareexpectedtogrowintodifferentpersons.Tosomeextent,theyfutureisde
10、terminedbytheirparentsandthesocietysurroundingthem.Boysareexpectedtoberealmen.Girlsareexpectedtobegentleandkindwomen.Parentsexpecttheirboystomusthaveachievements,tocompete,toknowhowtocontrolemotions.Parentsasktheirgirlstomakethebestofcommunicationskillsandknowhowtoexpresstheirfeelings.Boysareencoura
11、gedtobeassertive,aggressiveandhavethespiritofadventure.Girlsaresupposedtobesoftandpassive.Thefollowingexpresssuchideaexactly:“Arabmales,whoareexpectedtobethebreadwinnersoftheirfamilies,enjoymorefreedomoutsidethehomeand,therefore,areexposedtodiverseexperiences,allowingthemtobecomemoreinnovativeanddar
12、ingtoseekoutnewpossibilities.Females,ontheotherhand,areexpectedtostayindoorsandliveinaroutine,secure,andpredicableenvironment,whertheyperformdailyhouseholdchoresandtakecareoftheirchildren.Insuchconfinedenvironment,femalescanhavemoretimetousesensoryexperiences,wheras,theyhavelittleopportunitiesofrisk
13、takingorventuresoutsidethehome.Alumran,2020,p311Alltheexpectationhasgreatinfluenceonthem.Asaresult,malesaregoodatlogicalthinking.Theirthinkinghasthefeatureofextensiveness,flexibilityandcreativity.Theyaresuperiortoinnaturalscience,suchasmathematics,physics,chemistry,philosophy.Butfemalesaregoodatimag
14、ethinking.Generallyspeaking,theylikeEnglish,literature,art,biologyandotherdisciplinesandtheyareeasiertoachievemorethanmales.Therefore,girlstudentswillbebetterabletorecitemorewords.Boyswillfinditisatoughtaskforthemtorememberwords.DifferentattitudePersonalityhasbiginfluenceonstudentsacademiclearning.F
15、emalestudentsattitudestowardsEnglisharesomewhathigherthanmalestudentsAbidin,2020.Thoughdifferentpersonhasdifferentpersonality,onbalance,malesareimpulsive.Femalesarerelativelygentle.“ApositiveattitudeshouldbetheumbrellaoflanguagelearningAbidin,2020,p126.InductivemethodisadoptedbymostChineseEnglishtea
16、chers.Theygivesomeexamples,andthensummarizetherulesofgrammar.Girlsgetmorefromthiskindapproach.Girlstudentsholdthedominantpositioninlanguagelearning.ThedifferenceinlearningattitudeandpersonalityaffectstheirEnglishlearning.endprintLearninginterestShoaibandDornyei2020advocatedthatgenderisanimportantper
17、spectiveundersecondlanguagelearninginvestigationsandconcludedthatfemalesshowmoreinterests,positivebehaviorsandperformancescomparedwiththemales.Itiswellknownthatinterestisoneofthemostimportantelementsinoneslearning.Boyshavemuchmorehobbiesandintereststhangirls.Somuchhobbiesandinterestswilldistractthem
18、fromtheirEnglishlearning.Onthecontrary,girlsarewillingtospendmuchtimeintheirEnglishlearning.ItisunlikelyformostgirlstofailinthefinalEnglishexamination.LearningprocessThisprocessreferstotheschoolsession.Onthesession,duringtheclass,womanstudentswillbehavemoreactivelythanmanstudents.Iftheywanttobetreat
19、edequallybytheirEnglishteacher,theymustpaymoreattentiontotheirEnglishlearning.Otherwise,theirteacherswillnotshowsolicitudeforgirls.Whytheauthorstatelikethis.InChina,majorityEnglishteachersarewomanteachers.Becauseofthegenderdifference,womanteachersliketofocusonmanstudents.Itisacceptedbysociolinguisti
20、cs.WomanEnglishteachersarestrictwithgirlstudents.Foralongrun,womanstudentswillachievemoreinEnglishlearning.Andthenitisimpossibleformostgirlstudentstofailtheexamination.TimespentontheEnglishexaminationWomanstudentswouldliketospendmuchtimeonthereviewingworkbeforetheexamination.Mostofthecontentoftheexa
21、minationarerelatedtothecoursebook.Girlsaremorecareful.TheytakemorenotesthanboysinEnglishclass,fortheyrememberedmoreEnglishwords,theotherpartofthisthesishasdiscussedthisissue.Theirnotesareagoodhelptomakepreparationforstudents.Inaword,girlswillfeelrelaxedinthepreparingprocessthanboys.Differentattitude
22、towardsfailureItisknowngirlsaremoreembarrassedwhenfacingthesamething.Becauseofthispeculiarity,Girlscareabouttheexaminationresultthanboys.Girlswillfeelashamediftheyfailanexamination.Instead,boyshavealiberalattitudeonfailure.Itisnotasobadthingtofailanexamination.Tosomeextent,ittellswhymoreboystudentsa
23、relikelytofailanEnglishexamination.DifferentlearningstylesMalesandfemalesadoptdifferentlearningstylesBoverie,Huffman,Meier,Philbin,1995;Keri,2020;Miller,Finley,McKinley,1990.AccordingtoAlumransidea,malesareintuitivelearnersandfemalesaresensinglearnersAlumran,2020.Sensinglearnersarespecializinginmemo
24、rizing,solvingproblems.However,understandingabstractionsanddiscoveringpossibilitiesandrelationshipareintuitivelearnersdepartmentFelder,1996.Mostofthetestcontentsarecloselyrelatedtothetextbook.Girlsaregoodatmemorizingsomething.ThatisoneofthereasonswhymostgirlscanpassaEnglishexaminationeasilythanboysd
