10、omwas!Fromthebookshotfortharayoflightwhichgrewbroadandfull,likethestemofatree,fromwhichbrightraysspreadupwardandoverthestudent'shead.Eachleafwasfresh,andeachflowerwaslikeabeautifulfemalehead;somewithdarkandsparklingeyes,andotherswitheyesthatwerewonderfullyblueandclear.Thefruitgleamedlikestars,an

11、dtheroomwasfilledwithsoundsofbeautifulmusic.Thelittlegoblinhadneverimagined,muchlessseenorheardof,anysightsogloriousasthis.Hestoodstillontiptoe,peepingin,tillthelightwentoutinthegarret.Thestudentnodoubthadblownouthiscandleandgonetobed;butthelittlegoblinremainedstandingtherenevertheless,andlisteningt

12、othemusicwhichstillsoundedon,softandbeautiful,asweetcradle-songforthestudent,whohadlaindowntorest.“Thisisawonderfulplace,”saidthegoblin;“Ineverexpectedsuchathing.Ishouldliketostayherewiththestudent;”andthelittlemanthoughtitover,forheSohewasasensiblelittlespirit.Atlasthesighed,“butthestudenthasnojam!

13、”wentdownstairsagainintothehuckster'sshop,anditwasagoodthinghegotbackwhenhedid,forthecaskhadalmostwornoutthelady'stongue;hehadgivenadescriptionofallthathecontainedononeside,andwasjustabouttoturnhimselfovertotheothersidetodescribewhatwasthere,whenthegoblinenteredandrestoredthetonguetothelady.

14、Butfromthattimeforward,thewholeshop,fromthecashboxdowntothepinewoodlogs,formedtheiropinionsfromthatofthecask;andtheyallhadsuchconfidenceinhim,andtreatedhimwithsomuchrespect,thatwhenthehucksterreadthecriticismsontheatricalsandartofanevening,theyfancieditmustallcomefromthecask.Butafterwhathehadseen,th

15、egoblincouldnolongersitandlistenquietlytothewisdomandunderstandingdownstairs;so,assoonastheeveninglightglimmeredinthegarret,hetookcourage,foritseemedtohimasiftheraysoflightwerestrongcables,drawinghimup,andobliginghimtogoandpeepthroughthekeyhole;and,whilethere,afeelingofvastnesscameoverhimsuchasweexp

19、redfullofflames.Wasitintheirhouse,oraneighbor's?Noonecouldtell,forterrorhadseizeduponall.Thehuckster'swifewassobewilderedthatshetookhergoldear-ringsoutofherearsandputtheminherpocket,thatshemightsavesomethingatleast.Thehucksterrantogethisbusinesspapers,andtheservantresolvedtosaveherbluesilkmantle,whichshehadmanagedtobuy.Eachwishedtokeepthebestthingstheyhad.Thegoblinhadthesamewish;for,withonespring,hewasupstairsandinthestudent'sroom,whomhefoundstandingbytheopenwindow,andlookingquitecalmlyatthefire,whichwasragingatthehouseofaneighboropposite.Thegoblincaughtupthewo
