2、 writing material for his works.In Hemingways times the United States was going through a crisis period, though its industry was developing rapidly and material was in profusion, there exsisted disquieting elements, which led to The Great Recession. This full of war, violence, murder, evil, fear, de

3、spair and death world had a decisive impact on Hemingway , and it left incurable trauma both physically and mantally.However, Hemingway was not defeated, he figthted against this absurd world with a pen heaps of times. “The Sun Also Rise”,” A Farewell to Arms”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”,” The Old Ma

4、n and the Sea”are his classic magnum opus.Though he was gifted,he led a a turbulent social life, was married four times, Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. During his later life, Hemingway suffered from increa

In July 1961, he commited suicide by shooting himself.In in October 1929, The capitalist economic crisis happened,which led to industrial crists, wealth inequlities, strikes of workers, glut of goods,high unemployment and many other social problems. The historical and social background related to the content of the book is the First World War.A Farewell to Arms is told through the point of view of Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American serving as an ambulance driver

7、in the Italian army during World War I. Henry is drafted into the army and is sent to the battlefield of the Italian front to hold the post of lieutenant. Because of the introduction of his good friend Rinaldi,he kowns Catherine and falls in love with her. But so on after, Henry has to go to the fro

8、nt, he is wounded at the front by a trench mortar shell when he is eating with his peers, his leg is badly injured and sent to the field hospital then shifted to a newly-established American hostinal in Milan where he met with Catherine again,she tends to him in the hospital during his recuperation,

9、 and their relationship develops.They love each other so much that they look foras many opportunities as possible to stay together And Henry is nominated awarded a silver medal because of his injury. During this period Henry is pregnant.After Henrys wound recovers,he has to return to the front,he wi

10、ll miss Catherine as long as he is not so busy. Howerever,Henry narrowly escapes death at the hands of fanatical Italian soldiers, who are executing officers separated from their troops during the Italians' disastrous retreat following the Battle of Caporetto.All that he thinks is that he must m

11、eet with Catherine.Hower, Catherine has gone to Stresa, after many setbacks they have a reunion. after a sojourn in an Italian resort, the couple flees to Switzerland on the eve of Henry's arrest for deserting. 12、 do after the war together , they are both waiting anxiously for the child's birth. Unfortunately their child is born dead, and Catherine dies shortly after due to hemorrhages. 13、tention to the love .When reading the book,we can notice how every inportant event of the war is overshadowed by the strong love story behind.In Hemingways oppinion , The war itself is a kind of absurd behavior, ridiculously, many teenages regard it as a glorious thing. Different from those confused

14、 young people, Hemingway had a deep and clear understanding about the evil war. Thinking about the themes of this story,though there are several themes in this novel, the major theme is the importance of love and loss in a male-female relationship. In this novel, Hemingway contrasted the crurlty of

15、the war with the personal happeniness ,lay much emphases on the goodness of love so as to show the brutality of war when love is destroyed.As far as I am concerned,the war is the most evil thing in the world,which not only ruin peoples homes, but vandalize peoples hearts.Without war,I believe that H

16、enry and Catherine could have led a happy life , Catherine and their child would not die.The title of this novel is A Farewell to Arms,which has two ascepts of meaning,in the first sense,it means that say good bye to the war,in the second sense,say good byeto the hug,the insinuation is obvious.Throu

17、gh Catherine,we can see that the auther still has no idea to forget his first true lover. The last part of this novel makes a strong impression on me. “You cant come in now,” one of the nurses said. “Yes I can,” I said. “You cant come in yet.” “You get out,” I said. “The other one too.” But after I

18、had got them out and shut the door and turned off the light it wasnt any good.It was like saying good-by to a statue.After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain. These words seems to be simple,but very exquisite.We can read Henrys behavior and language after Catherine dies between lines,where reveals irresistible dismal atmosphere,we can feel the protagonists strong feeling of dissatisf
