3、ather had sacrifi _d for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a sermon on Mothers Day. She thought there should also be a Fathers Day _lebration. And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonoras

Britain took the idea of Fathers Day from the American _lebration and it has been _lebrated officially sin _ the 1970s Fathers Day is a holiday to _lebrate fatherhood and parenting by _les, just as Mothers Day _lebrates motherhood. 7、establishment of the _lebration of Fathers Day was Mrs Sonora S _rt Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson S _rt, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarviss efforts to establish Mothers Day. Althou
8、gh she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her fathers death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to _ke arrangements, and the _lebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first Fathers Day was _lebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. Unofficial support from suc
9、h figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge remended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson _de Fathers Day a holiday to be _lebrated on the third Sunday
10、of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon. The origin of Fathers Day is not clear. Some say that it began with a church servi _ in West Virginia in 1908. Others say the first Fathers Day _remony was held in Vancouver, Washington. Regardless
11、 of when the first true Fathers Day ourred, the strongest promoter of the holiday was Mrs. Bru _ John Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She thought of the idea for Fathers Day while listening to a Mothers Day sermon in 1909. Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William S _rt. S _rt, who was a
12、 Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife _d while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. S _rt was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. After Sonora became an _ she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising
13、 his children as a single parent. It was her father that _de all the parental sacrifi _s and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving _n. In 1909, Mrs. Dodd approached her own minister and others in Spokane about having a church servi _ dedicated to fathers on June 5, her
14、 fathers birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to prepare the servi _, so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th. From then on, the state of Washington _lebrated the third Sunday in June as Fathers Day. Children _de special desserts, or visited their fathers if they lived apart. In earl
15、y times, wearing flowers was a traditional way of _lebrating Fathers Day. Mrs. Dodd favored the red rose to honor a father still living, while a white flower honored a de _ased dad. J.H. Berringer, who also held Fathers Day _lebrations in Washington State as early as 1912, chose a white lilac as the
16、 Fathers Day Flower. States and organizations began lobbying Congress to declare an annual Fathers Day. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea, but it was not until 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge _de it a national event to establish more inti _te relations between fathers and t
17、heir children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations.
