文档简介
2011年6月Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic of Certificate Craze. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below:My opinion on certificate craze1. 现在许多人热衷于各类证书考试2. 其目的各不相同3. 在我看来Sample 1 For a growing number of Chinese people, the most productive thing to do with ones spare time is to study for some kind of certification. From languages to business skills to teaching, certifications act as proof that you are skilled in something very specific. More and more, a resume with degrees and work experiences looks a bit boring; certifications are like accessories they complete the outfit.Certifications accomplish several purposes. First, they show employers that youre diversified; you have made an effort to learn skills outside of your major or occupation. Also, certifications show that you are proactive; you dont sit around in your spare time. Instead, youre constantly looking to improve yourself. This is what sets applicants apart from the rest when applying for a sought-after position. In my opinion, certifications are attractive, but should not be over-emphasized. Communication skills are equally as important, and can be honed and strengthened without paying for a class. After all, interviews are concerned with more than what is on the paper.Sample 2 Presently, training schools of various kinds have gained increasing popularity not only for college students, but also for people who have stepped out of the ivory tower. They spring up like mushrooms to cater for peoples craze for certificates. We may wonder: what might be the cause of the craze? The primary reason, as is known to all, is the fierce competition and contest in the job market as a result of the population explosion. This is true especially after the expansion of college admission. As a result, a masters degree, let alone a bachelors degree, cannot guarantee a job with a decent salary. In this case, an increasing number of youngsters burn midnight oil to pass endless examinations so that they may obtain an edge over others in the fight for desired positions, because they are convinced that the certificate rewards of the exams will qualify them for the posts they hope for.Apart from the competition for jobs, another equally important factor is the desire for knowledge. Some students, study-holics in the eyes of other people, are always craving for new knowledge in diverse fields but afraid to stop halfway in the pursuit. For these individuals, a certificate is a spur to continuous effort. For this reason, they are often seen on the way from one examination to another for a new certificate. No doubt, hard work for certificates can benefit us in many ways. It can bring us knowledge and access to jobs we desire. But surely a certificate is not everything. It cannot provide us with creativity, which is a must for invention and innovation. It even cannot give us security for a job. The best winner is the training school: they earn millions of dollars from the certificate craze.2010年12月My View on University Ranking1 现在有很多高校评级2 人们对此看法各异3 你认为Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that university ranking has gained increasing popularity - institutions home and abroad are always interested in it; newspapers and magazines are fond of carrying the news. Unfortunately, it has also given rise to some problems never thought of. Confronted with the dilemma, should we carry on the practice? When it comes to this question, peoples views vary from one to another.People who support ranking have their reasons. They are convinced that it can stimulate people, teachers and students alike, to work harder so that they can climb on the ladder or at least maintain their position. In this way, universities can produce more talents and knowledge demanded by our society. Also, supporters of university ranking maintain that it can act as a guide for employers when they decide where to find the right employees. But others may not agree. These people would argue that university ranking might force universities to care more about their position in the ranking but not about research that they are expected to do. For instance, it is often reported that some professors spend more time in bribing than in labs in order to have an edge in the fierce competition. Another good case in point is that some scholars even sacrifice their integrity to plagiarize under the pressure of “publish or perish”.Who is right? Of course both sides have their reasons. As far as I am concerned, we might as well stop the practice for the good of universities and society. Universities are a place for free academic study. Only when scholars are free in their pursuits, can they make contribution to society.2010年6月Due Attention Should Be Given To the Study of Chinese1. 近年来在学生中出现了忽视中文学习的现象;2. 出现这种现象的原因和后果;3. 我认为Recently it often hits headlines of newspapers that some prestigious universities like Tongji exclude Chinese from the subjects to be tested in their practice of independent admission. This has aroused heated discussion among the public - Is Chinese not so important as English? What if we neglect the study of our mother tongue?First of all, globalization counts much for this phenomenon. In modern society, information in most media, be it the Internet or newspaper, is conveyed in English. As a saying goes, one can go to every corner of the world without any difficulty in communicating with local people. Unfortunately, while we emphasize the importance of English, we underrate the value of Chinese though China has been developing at an amazing speed. But neglecting the study of Chinese is extremely harmful if the situation is left unfettered. The major harm is that Chinas traditional value is likely to get lost because language and ideas are interlocked in most cases. For example, when interviewed, most youngsters show that they are quite unfamiliar with some famous figures and their sayings. To sum up, many reasons are responsible for the phenomenon and it will do us harm if we leave the situation as it is. Faced with the problem, we are expected to take effective measures. For one thing, the government should work out rules to ensure the time for the study of Chinese in school. Only in this way, can we find a cure for the problem.2009年12月Should Parents Send their Kids to Art Classes?1.家长送学生参加各种艺术班2.有人支持,有人反对3.作为大学生,我的观点A childs world is supposed to be fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. Unfortunately, this is not the case for some kids, especially for those born and bred in cities - their joys are dimmed and even lost because a majority of them are forced to attend various art classes. Some claim that it is beneficial for childrens development. They might have their reasons because most parents are convinced that their kids are gifted gifts from the god. They presume that the earlier their children are exposed to arts, the more likely it is to find out the artistic potential hidden in them. Even if their children fail to become another child prodigy like Lang Lang or Li Yundi, the interests in arts, say, in music, cultivated in childhood will be of great value in their whole life.In spite of the possible benefits mentioned, I, like others, am strongly against it. The major harm is that it might deprive children of their pleasure to play after school. Faced with competition and contest for better universities, most children are buried in piles of homework. Forcing them to art classes will leave them less time to enjoy the beauty of the nature or to find their talent in things they are really interested in.To sum up, childhood is a time for children to play as they wish. Rather than cramming knowledge, it is more important to pave the way for their desire to know than to put them on a diet of facts they are not ready to assimilate.2009年6月On the importance of a name1. 有人说名字或名称很重要2. 也有人觉得名字或名称无关紧要3. 我认为According to the Bible, it is the almighty God who gave names to everything he created: he named the light Day and the darkness Night. In fact, a name is a word or phrase that man uses to denote and identify a specific person, place or thing. There is no inexorable correlation between the sign and the signified. For this reason, some claim that names are not so vital as they are supposed to be. However, I am fully convinced that they are of great importance. Take the name of a person as an example. It is known to all that a persons name is divided into two parts: given name and surname. The given name is the name our parents assign us. We ourselves might change it later in our life. Usually, when a name is given, it contains a lot of information. Say, li in the name of some Chinese females shows that we wish them to beautiful while wei in the names of some males reveals that we expect them to be great in their future life. As to the surname or family name, it is even more important, so important that some people may sacrifice their life for it. Originally, man had no such a name. But ever since a certain name was given, each member of the family carries it wherever he goes. Rather than merely a sign, it is the root from which we can trace back to our ancestor, the tie that helps bind us to other members of the same clan, the dignity most people hope to live for. Apart from the name of a person, that of a place or thing is also significant in that it embodies history and culture. All in all, though names are assigned artificially, man is not free when giving names. But God is.2008年12月How to improve students mental health1、 大学生的心理健康十分重要2、 因此,学校可以.3、 我们自己应当.There is no denying the fact that mental health is of great importance to college students. Nowadays, many students in college suffer from mental illness, which severely affects their life and study. Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list. Reports are often heard that some students committed suicide or murdered their roommates. Typical examples include the case of Ma Jiajue and that of a girl stabbing her schoolmates. In view of the seriousness of the situation, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. On the one hand, due attention has to be paid by colleges to students mental health. First, lectures on psychological health should be frequently given to students to prevent problems from happening. Secondly, psychological clinics should be set up to provide troubled students with timely help.As to students, we should keep the channel of communication open among ourselves and between us and our teachers and parents. Besides, in case of mental illness, we should not hesitate to go to psychological counselors for help. Only with these measures taken can we expect sound growth of college students. How to Avoid MisunderstandingsMisunderstandings may frequently occur in our everyday life. For example, there is a misunderstanding when people use the same words but do not mean the same things. Misunderstanding may also arise between people who behave differently. Misunderstanding each other may cause a lot of trouble in our daily life. Many a quarrel has come about through misunderstanding. Generation gaps appear because of misunderstandings. A serious misunderstan
