D. until about 900. Each city had its own king and ruling class. The cities traded with one another, but often fought as well. Around the year 900, the Maya abandoned many of their cities.Archaeologists and other scientists have long puzzled over why the Maya left. They have examined the cities carefully, and studied the settlements that surround them. In Copan they found many tools dating from 500 to about 1000 and a few tools dating from about 1000 to 1200.
