though i usually left in the evening ,for some reason last time i had to choose to set off after midnight i was on my way back to austin when i realized i left an important file , and knew i had to return to get it. i took the first exit i could, but when i rounded the corner, an 18-wheeler was stopped dead in the exit lane. i swerved(急转弯) to avoid it, and then i realized that there was something wrong with my car so i pulled into a small parking lot and unsurprisingly found the area deserted at 3 :15 am. ive lived in urban areas most of my life. im fairly street-wise and don t become frightened easily , but i knew i was in a pretty tough neighborhood. there was no one in houston to pick me up. i immediately locked the doors and picked up my phone to call a tow truck. soon a young man knocked on my drivers side window and asked if he could help me judging from his appearance, he was far from a mad man, but i knew he was far more likely to rob than help me. so i lied to him. after a while ,he asked again ,but this time i politely refused and told him the tow truck was due any minute. he finally said, madam ,you need help. a tow truck in houston will arrive anywhere between 45 minutes and approximately never ( which i knew was true) , and you arent going anywhere until you change your flat tire. after considering thoroughly , i got out. he looked surprised, but got right to work. he changed the tire ,returned the seat to its place and said, thank you for letting me help you. you gave me a chance when most people would never open the door to someone like me. would it be okay if i gave you a hug? when i recovered ,i gave him a giant hug ,i left with a new tire and a renewed faith in human nature. 21. whats the matter with the authors car? a. it couldnt get findings that individuals exposed to low levels of lights overnight can develop signs of clinical depression. investigators , curious as to whether the color of light contributed to depressive symptoms in humans ,designed an experiment that exposed hamsters (仓鼠) to different colors. hamsters sleep during the day and are active at night ,in reverse, humans sleep at night and are active during the day. that is why they chose hamsters to do the experiment. the first group of hamsters ( g1) was kept in the dark during their nighttime period. the second group of hamsters ( g2) was exposed to blue light and the third group (g3) slept in the presence of white light. the fourth group of hamsters (g4) was exposed to red light. after four weeks, researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. randy nelson, chair of ohio state universitys department of neuroscience and co-author of the study, said animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. what we saw is these animals didnt show any sleep disruptions at all but they did have disturbed the biological clock genes and they did show depressive symptoms. however ,if they were in the dim red light ,they did not, nelson said. nelson said theres a lot of blue in white light, and this type of light is similar to daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime, which explained why hamsters seemed more depressed in blue light and white light than hamsters exposed to red light or darkness nelson had suggestions for so-called night owls or people who work the night shift. my recommendation is that you should live a typical mostly active life during the day and the mostly inactive at night you should limit exposure to tvs which are quite bluish in the light they give off and computer screens and things like that, stated nelson. of course , you can also install protective glass on your computer screen. 29. what does the underlined phrase in reverse in than to make a giant leap. 37 figure out where you want to go, take a step, and keep on stepping. diligence and persistence will get you there2. 38 two people can be affected by the same circumstance but respond in completely different ways. the reason is that it just depends on their attitudes. when you expect life to be unkind, it will always live up to your expectations. on the other hand , when you consider yourself to be in a fortunate situation ,you will find yourself in many more. 393. you can only change yourself. dont wait for someone who hurt you to make it up to you; this kind of thinking only keeps your old wounds from healing. 40 you have no control over them, and they may never change. inner peace is found by changing your thinking, not the people who hurt you. so forgive those who have hurt you in the past, and even more importantly, forgive yourself for allowing them to hurt you. then smile like youve never cried re-open your heart and mind like youve never been hurt
