Here are some things you may wish to know about eating together in the West. In the West, lunch is eaten later, always after midday, sometimes at one oclock. Dinner is served around 7 pm or even later. In Spain its usual to eat lunch at 2 pm and dinner at 10 pm!,14,At the start of a meal the Chinese usually say “manman chi”. The French say “Bon appetit”, and the Italians say “Buon appetito”. But theres no similar expression in English! “Enjoy your meal” is usually only said by a waiter. For “ganbei”, you can say “Cheers”!,15,Chopsticks are only used when people eat Chinese food. Knives and forks are used for most food. The fork is held in your left hand and the knife in your right, and the food is held with the fork and cut with the knife. Americans often cut all their food first, and then put the fork in their right hand to eat it. Soup is drunk with a spoon. However, there is some food which can be eaten with your fingers, such as chicken legs, seafood, bread and cake.,16,At the start of a meal, if youre the guest, youll be invited to serve yourself (“Help yourself!”), or your plate will be filled by your host (“Can I serve you?”). If youve been given something you dont like, it should be pushed to the edge of the plate and left. You dont have to say why, but if you feel an explanation is required, just say, “Im sorry, I cant eat this.” No one will be cross. If youre offered more food, but cant eat any more, just say. “No, thanks, it was delicious, but Ive had enough.”,17,Generally, fewer dishes are prepared than in China. It isnt thought to be so important to offer too much food. Finally, its sometimes difficult to know when the meal is over. If youve been invited to dinner by western friends, youll know that youre expected to stay and talk around the dinner table long after the last dish has been brought to the table, and its thought quite rude if you leave as soon as you finish eating. The golden rule is: Watch the other people. Do as they do.,18,4 Answer the questions.,19,5,20,Language points,21,1. However, there is some food which can be eaten with your fingers, such as chicken legs, 然而,有的食物可以用手指吃,例如鸡腿, however意为“然而”,常用来表示转折关系。如: I like eating meat, however, it can makes me fat. This is the book which I like it very much. I have some hobbies, such as collecting stamps, coins. ,23,2. If youve been invited to dinner by western friends, youll know that youre expected to stay and talk around the dinner table long after the last dish has been brought to the table. have been invited是现在完成时的被动语态,其结构是:have (has)been及物动词的过去分词,如: The dishes have been eaten up by them. ,24,2) expect意为“期待,期望”,如: We are expecting rain. be expected to do 意为“被期望干某事”,如: We are expected to study harder. The teachers take good care of the children. The children were taken good care of (by the teachers).,26,2. My father gave me the recorder. a. I was given the recorder ( by my father). b. The recorder was given to me ( by my father ). They found the story interesting. The story was found interesting.,28,4. 注意主动语态中有些谓语动词,如:feel, hear, listen, have, make, let, look, watch, see, notice等后面带有省略to的不定式作宾语补足语,变为被动语态时,省去的“to”必须补上。如: The boss made her work ten hours a day. She was made to work ten hours a day (by the boss).,29,教你巧学妙记: 以下常见的十大动词我们可用一句话来记忆: 一感(feel), 二听(hear, listen), 三使(make, have, let), 四看(see, watch, notice, look)。 ,30,Exercises,31,1.
