I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years, my mind was planning this beautiful future. Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go . Death had never touched me so closely. After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.Enjoying lifes precious quirks ( 偶发事件 ) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isnt content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.21. The reason why the author changed his idea of success is that _ . A.he cant afford his house B.his beloved teacher was dead C. he didnt know what to do or where to go D.he lost a few beloved persons in a short time22.According to the author which of the following is the real success for a person? A. Being famous.B. Truly living life each day. C. Good car and big house.D. Material achievements.23.What does the author want to tell the readers? A. The true meaning of the life.B. The true meaning of studying.C. How to achieve success.D. His opinion about success. BLast week I ran into an old friend. Helen, and it was lovely to catch up on all the things that we had experienced since then and to recall our school and college days. We had taken quite different paths and this was one of the reasons why we hadnt stayed in touch with each other, the main one being that she had moved to the other side of the world. While I had chosen to stay in my hometown, she had decided to win a medical scholarship to a medical college in the UAE, where she later got a dental(牙科的) scholarship and went to one of the best dental schools. After graduation, she went on a successful dental practice, and she had two dentists helping her.We then began to discuss our old teachers, who were strict but fair compared with many of todays teachers, In our school days corporal punishment(体罚)was only just going out of fashion and new laws were coming into effect though they were too late to help us. Thankfully we both bad been good students generally and rarely had to feel the pain caused by the ruler. But teachers in modern schools have to be a lot braver than in our time because many children are advised to be respected and punishment of children is forbidden, and as a result, you will find teachers have to face rudeness, teasing and even attack.Heavy work, low salaries, little opportunity for promotion(晋升),and the rising cost of living, it is no wonder that the number of people choosing a career in teaching has become smaller in recent years. We both agree that education should be valued and our future will depend on the children.24. What was the main reason why the author lost touch with Helen? A. They disliked each other B. Helen went abroad. C. The author didnt like Helens job. D. They were too busy with their own work.25. What can we learn about Helen? A. She would work with the author. B. She once taught in a medical college. .C. She was successful in her career. D. She want abroad to be a dentist.26. Paragraph 4 mainly talks about_.A the reasons why fewer people choose to be teachers now. B the teachers salaries C. the teachers living conditions. D. the main problems that teachers are facing now.27. We can learn from the passage that _.A the author is against being strict with students.B. the author is for getting rid of punishment.C. the author thinks education has improved.D. the author thinks teachers are under a lot of stress now. C There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Web site to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called “What Color is Your Parachute (降落伞)?” by Richard Bolles.
