In machine construction, couplings are used to effect the semipermanent connection between adjacent rotating shafts. Like the dc motor discussed in the preceding section, the induction motor has a stator and a rotor mounted on bearings. However, in the induction motor both stator winding and rotor winding carry alternating currents. The alternating current is supplied to the stator winding directly and to the rotor winding by induction. The speed of an induction motor is determined by the synchronous speed and slip of the motor. The synchronous speed is related to the supply frequency, and the slip can be controlled by the regulation of voltage or current supplied to the motor.
