Unit 4 A Night the Earth Didnt Sleep Good morning, ladies and gentlemen:My topic is “A Night the Earth Didnt Sleep” taken from Unit4. My presentation consists of 9 parts: Text analysis; Objectives;Focal and difficult points;Learner analysis;Approach of teaching and learning;Teaching stages and procedures;Assignment;Teaching aids;Blackboard design.Part1: Text AnalysisThis is Unit 4, Book 1. The title is A Night the Earth Didnt Sleep. This unit mainly tells basic knowledge about earthquake. I will divide this unit into 4 periods. This lesson is the first one of Unit 4. And I will teach reading in this class.Part2: ObjectivesIt contains two parts: Instructional objectives and Educational objectives.The instructional objectives 1) Improve Ss reading skills, such as skimming, scanning, detailed reading, conclusion and so on.2) Enlarge general knowledge, such as what will happen before the earthqauke, we can take what measures to protect ourselves during the earthquake and so on.3) Improve learning strategies, such impression, conclusion and so on.The educational objectives 1) Affective objective that encourage Ss to help each other when they are in disaster2) Foster awareness of cultural understanding, such as the reason of earthquakePart 3 Focal and difficult pointsThe focal point 1) what (the storys structure)2) why (because the storys structure is the plot of the Tangshan Earthquake. Only understand the structure, Ss can know the story clearly.)3) how (analyse every paragraphys main idea, then let Ss discuss it ,last have a conclusion)The difficult point 1) what (what happened before and during the Tangshan earthquake)2) why (because the earthquake destroyed nearly everything, and all the things might give Ss confusion.)3) how (use a table to present what have been destroyed in the earthquake)Part 4 Learner analysisMost of the Ss have experienced the Wenchuan earthquake and known the devastation of earthquake. The story about the Tangshan earthquake is similar to that. Ss may be interested in it. So I will guide the Ss to learn the text nestling their lives.Part 5 Approach of teaching and learningAs for Approach of teaching, I will use brainstorm and Task-based teaching method. As for Approach of learning, I will use analyzing, discussion, and conclusion.Part 6 Teaching stages and proceduresI will divide the teaching stages and procedures into three parts: pre-reading, while-reading, post-reading.Pre-reading:1) Let Ss recall what they were doing when the Whenchuan earthquake happened and share their experiences.2) Describe the two photos differences to their patners. (warming up)3) Look at the pictures in pre-reading, and think about what will happen before the earthquake.4) Inform Ss some reasons of earthquake.While-reading: 1) Ss skim the whole passage, and find out main idea of every paragraph.2) Ss discuss the storys structure, and share it, then conclude the meaning of every part.3) Use tables to help Ss understand the story better.e.g.ThingsWhat happenedwater in the wellrose and fellwell wallsdeep cracks, smelly gaschickens and pigstoo nervous to eatmiceran out of, looking for places to hidefishjumped outskybright lightssoundsound of planes heard even no planeswater pipescracked and burst4) After finish the text, I will introduce some measures which can protect us in the earthquake.Post-reading:1) Finish the exercises on page 272) Let Ss share the feeling about earthquake with his partners. Then ask one student to share it in whole class.Part 7 assignmentRead the passage again, find out the attributive clauses, and underline them.Part 8 teaching aidsWrite tables and words on PPT.Use the pictures in the book.Write the structure on the blackboard.Part 9 Blackboard designI will write the structure on the left, and the meaning of every party on the right. e.g. part one: para.1 Before earthquake
