What little we know about the inside of the earth comes from indirect evidence, such as the analysis of earthquakes. So maybe its time for a thorough new method to explore the earths inside.Scientist David Stevenson says we should forget about drilling holes.Instead,we should open a crack(裂缝).Stevenson suggests digging a crack about a half mile long,a yard wide, and a half mile deep with an explosion on the scale of a nuclear bomb.Next, hed pour a few hundred thousand tons of molten(熔化的) iron into the crack, along with a robot. The iron, thicker than the surrounding crust, would move downward at about 16 feet per second, carrying the robot with it and opening the crack deeper and deeper. The iron mass would drop for about a week and 2,000 miles to the outer edge of the earth core, the robot sending out data to the surface.Stevenson compares his idea to space exploration.“Were going somewhere we havent been before,” he says.“In all possibility, there will be surprises.”This idea can probably be put in the drawer marked with“Isnt Going to Happen”.The robot would have to survive temperatures that would melt pretty much anything. But Stevensons idea may inspire a new look at an old problem.Great things can come from what seems like impossible ideas.5Going inside the earth is than going into space.A.more interestingB.more possibleC.easierD.more challenging答案:D解析:推理判断题。 6How deep have we gone into the earth until now?A.6 miles.B.4,000 miles.C.7.5 miles.D.25 miles. 从第二段中的“RussianscientistsdugthedeepestholeinSiberia,butbottomedoutatabout7.5milesbelowthesurface.” 7Which of the following is TRUE about David Stevensons idea?A.It is an inspiring but not practical idea now.B.It is a practical proposal that has come into use now.C.It is a good proposal that will soon be put into practice.D.It is a false theory that cannot be carried out at all. 8What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A.An Annoying Problem for HumansB.To the Center of the EarthC.The Mohole ProjectD.David Stevensons Proposal答案:B解析:主旨大意题。 CEvery year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii,Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous forits stadium(运动场) and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeiis people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years.Once,Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius,a grass-covered volcano.Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries,so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.In August of AD 79,Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air.Soon stones and hot ashes began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later,Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes.Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries,Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then,in the year 1861,an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii.Slowly, carefully,Ginseppe and his men dug.The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79.There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats.Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom,so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too;metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of breada type of bread that is still sold in Italy today.Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.Ginseppe has died, but his work continues.One-fourth has not been uncovered yet.Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw tourists to Pompeii.9Why do lots of people come to Pompeii each year?A.To visit the volcano.B.To shop and eat there.C.To watch sports and plays.D.To see how Pompeiians lived. 10Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?A.The city nearby offered all kinds of fun.B.The area produced the finest wine in Italy.C.Few people expected the volcano to erupt again.D.The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass. Buttheywerenot.” 11Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?A.Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.B.Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.C.Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.D.Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted. 12What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2,000 years ago?A.They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.B.They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.C.They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.D.They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79. (导学号55580025)(2017全国高考)If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping.I would have laughed heartily.Campers,in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites,ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me.13The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer.14 We slept in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctors bill for my sons food poisoning.I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness.15 Instead,we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.16 We have done a lot of it since.Recently,we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom,a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.17 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature.I recommend that you find your way in style.A.This time there was no tent.B.Things are going to be improved.C.The trip they took me on was a rough one.D.I was to learn a lot about camping since then,however.E.I must say that I have certainly come to enjoy camping.F.After the trip,my family became quite interested in camping.G.There was no shade as the trees were no more than 3 feet tall.
