Read the following and combine the two into one, using attributive clauses. Try to find the rules. 1.My classmates enjoyed the cake. I made the cake. Go over introduction to attributive clauses on page 8 and then have a discussion about what you have found. antecedent : the word the attributive clause modifies is called an antecedent. (Pick out the antecedent in each sentence) relative pronouns: which, that, who, whom, that, whose (relative adverbs: when, where, why) The functions of relative pronouns are that they introduce attributive clauses and at the same time they act as elements in the attributive clauses. (Try to read those sentences above and analyze them.) 1.When the antecedent is about a thing, we usually use that or which.That or which usually acts as a subject or an object in the attributive clause. When that or which is used as an object, we can leave them out. 2. When the antecedent is about a person, we usually use that, who, whom and whose. That or who acts as a subject in the attributive clause , that or whom an object and whose an attribute. Whom and that can be omitted.
