INTRODUCTIONThis report aims at the culture shock which means peoples feelings and behaviors when they move from one culture to another (Brick, 1991). According to the four stages of the culture shock (Brick, 1991), our group made a questionnaire about the situation of studying or living abroad and interviewed 45 students whom were selected at random in the William Building and the library of Middlesex University and not from the UK. In this report, the methodology is described and the results of the questionnaire are given. Then, we will analyze the data and explain our results by using theories from Brick (1991) and Boddy and Patton (1998). After the section of analysis and discussion, the conclusion of the research and the whole work of our group will be made. 2. METHODOLOGYOur team consist of three members. We used questionnaire to obtain information about culture shock. We constituted different kinds of questions. Firstly we started questionnaire with identifying people, which nationality they are and how old they are. And then we learned How long they have been in London and what their first impression of their destination was. If they express their first impression as excited, we learned what happened, effecting them badly. This question is related second stage of culture shock, depression stage. We focused on the problems and asked, what the most difficult problem they dealed. Until third stage, they must have felt culture shock a lot. In this point, we wanted to find out how they respond to the culture shock. After they lived certain time in new culture or new country, we examined whether pozitive situations arose. Generally they have positive improvements after they get used to living in new culture. This improvement is related to adjustment stage. After the adjustment satge, we stressed some questions to tell how they reach to acceptence stage. In this case, we asked how they spend their spare time and how much they know about UK culture. Finally we examined that there must have been some adjustment to decrease intensity of culture shock and adaptation period. Although we deducted some questions, our questionnaire seemed too long according to interviewees. Those long questions and answers caused them to loose their attention. We motivated them to focus on our questionnaire a lot. On the other hand, some people didnt want to allocate their time for questionnaire. Moreover, some of them replied to the questions without reading exactly. These situations cause to waste of our time. Each team member made an interview with 15 people. Finally we obtained 45 number of interviews. We examined our interviews in Exel. We constituted graphes and pie charts. According to objective data, we concluded culture shock.3. FINDINGSThe survey was done after interviewing 45 students selected at random of students at Middlesex University (MDX) to answer a questionnaire about the culture shock. Of the interviewees, found multiples international such as Thailand, China, Vietnam are the most interviewees from this report and the most common of students had affected by culture shock including language problem, weather and the difficult to contact with their family. On the other hand, 94 % of students found that after have been living here for almost one year they felt their English improved and 27 students found when they first arrived could adapt to the return culture easily and on the other hand 18 students felt a little difficult to adapted.4. DISCUSSION AND ANALYSIS The results of first question about nationalities shows that all the students who we interviewed came from different cultures and language environments from these of the UK, so they must felt the culture shock, and this was be demonstrated from the following questions. About 60% of the sample thought that they felt excited the first time they arrived in the UK while the first impression of 30% of the interviewees is normal. Those percentages illustrates the first stage of Brick (1991), the euphoria, and shows that most of the students thought that studying abroad is interesting and could be the beginning of their new lives when they were new in the UK. After the first impression, all sample found some problems such as local food (42%), local weather (53%), physically vulnerable (2%), economic problems (2%) and different religion, but according to the results of the seventh question, two-thirds of the interviewees thought that the most difficult problem to deal with is language problem, 16% of the sample thought that is lack of life skills such as cooking or washing and the others thought that is living far from friends and family. The entire sample always missed their families and friends and was often in contact with them (everyday for 67%, 3-4 times a week for 18%, once a week for 13% and 2-3 times a month for only 2%). According to Brick (1991), they became being in the depression stage, they found that many things seem difficult, and began to feel lonely, frustrated and hopeless. Then, the students seemed to enter the third stage, the adjustment. The thirteenth question illustrates that the students tried to decrease intensity of culture shock and adaptation period, a few (22%) prepared conversation type depends on cultural background, a significant majority (47%) learnt background of new culture from media (e.g. TV, newspaper) and some (31%) met people with different culture background especially during negotiating. And the data shows that, after some time later, students found some new and good situation such as almost all the students thought their English improved. That means they began to adapt to the local culture and thought this place is not so bad and wanted to understand some of their customs. In additiom, different students have different characters, so that some may like to stay alone and others like to make friends with each other. For example, 24% of the sample like staying at home to spend their spare time, 24% prefer going outside of London, 36% like meeting old friends and the others prefer making new friends. Absolutely, if someone likes making friends with other people, he or she may adapt to the local culture more easily.5. CONCLUSIONIn conclusion,as the information above, the purpose of this report is to research the culture shock related to our questionnaire. For this purpose, we did a lot of researches and finally got the result. Then, according to the four stages (Brick, 1991), I analyzed all the data to learn how the students feel and what problems they meet when they are studying abroad.REFERENCESl Brick, J., “Culture shock”, 1991, in China: A Handbook In Intercultural Communication, Sydney, National Centre For English Language Teaching And Research, pp. 9-16l Boddy D & Paton R, 1998, The International context of management in Management, Hemel Hempstead: Prentice Hall, pp. 88-97AppendicesThe questionnaire and the result1.What is your nationality?13 Thailand8 China4 Vietnam2 Colombia1 Libya1 Pakistan2 India4 Venezuela2 Korea2 Italy3 Saudi Arabian3 Turkish2.Your age when beginning studying abroada) Below 20 6b) 20-25 23c) 25-30 8d) Above 30 8e) Others3.How long have you been in Londona) below one year 20b) 1-2 years 14c) 2-3 years 9d) above 3 years 24.What was your first impression of your destination?a) Excited. 26b) Normal. 13c) Miserable. 6d) Hopeless 15.Can you adapt to the return culture easily?a) Yes, I can 27b) No, a little difficult 186.If you express your first impression as excited, and then what happened ,effecting you badly or get upset you? a) Dislike local food 19b) Dislike local weather 24c) Physically vulnerable 1d) Economic problems 1e) Different religion7.What is the most difficult problem to deal with for you?a) Language problem, especially speaking. 30b) Lack of life skills (e.g. cooking or washing) 7c) Lack of friends and family 78.How do you respond this culture shock?a) you respond by developing negative stereotypes of the host culture 15b) withdrawing as much as possible from contact with host country nationals 20c) struggling a lot to contact with host country nationals for overcoming culture shock 99.What were the new situations in your life some time
