found an unusual way to prevent our planet from overheating:move it to a cooler spot. All you have to do is send a few comets(彗星) in the direction of Earth, and its orbit will be changed. Our world will then be sent into a safer, colder part of the solar system. This idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) engineers and American astronomers. They say their plan could add another six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planeteffectively doubling its working life. The plan put forward by Dr. Laughlin, and his colleagues Don Korycansky and Fred Adams, needs carefully directing a comet of asteroid(小行星) so that it passes close by our planet and sends some of its gravitational energy to Earth.“Earths orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from the Sun,” Laughlin said.Engineers would then direct their comet so that it passed close to Jupiter or Saturn. The comet would pick up energy from one of these giant planets.Later its orbit would bring it back to Earth, and the process would be repeated. In the short term, the plan provides an ideal way to global warming, although the team was actually concerned with a much greater danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so “seriously compromise” our biosphere(生物圈)by cooking us.Thats why the group decided to try to save Earth. The plan has one or two worrying aspects, however. For a start, space engineers would have to be very careful about how they directed their asteroid or comet towards Earth. The smallest miscalculation(误算) in orbit could fire it straight at Earthwith deadly results. There is also the question of the Moon.As the scientific American magazine points out,if Earth was pushed out of its current position it is “most likely that the Moon would be stripped away from Earth,” it states. This would change our planets climate.1If the plan is successful,Earth will have a working life of_years.A12 billion B6 billionC18 billion D24 billion2What makes the scientists plan to save Earth?AA few comets are moving to the direction of Earth.BEarths working life is coming to an end soon.CEarth will become too hot for mankind to keep alive.DThe moon is moving farther and farther away from Earth3What does the underlined word “compromise” in Paragraph 6 mean?AProvide. BBenefit.CShare. DEndanger.4Which of the following best shows how the plan would work?5What serious problems might the plan cause according to the passage?AEarth might be moved too far away and man might be frozen to death.BThe comet might hit Earth and man might lose the moon.CThe comet might hit Jupiter or Saturn and never return to Earth.DEarths working life might be greatly shortened. dissolve v溶解生义:v.解散;解除;终止Their marriage was dissolved in 2009.他们于2009年解除了婚姻关系。The election was announced and the parliament was dissolved.宣布选举后,议会解散了。 Unit 4Astronomy:the science of the starsPeriod OneWarming Up & Reading.1.around2.about3.in4.down5.of;o;for7.with;over8.on.1.直到45亿38亿年前,这团尘埃逐渐稳定下来变成了固态的球体,它将成为什么仍然不得而知。(1)When are they to hand in their plan?(2)She is to be honoured for this great work.2这就产生了一个连锁反应使生命的发展成为可能。(1)I must make it clear that Ill always support you.(2)He found it impossible to continue working in Germany.3其中一些是昆虫,另外一些被称为两栖动物,它们既能在水中生存,又能在陆地上生存。(1)The students as well as their teacher are excited.(2)She can speak English as well as a native speaker.4它们为什么突然消失仍然是个谜。(1)In fact, the work remained unfinished.(2)Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated until the plane has come to a complete stop.1.B根据句意“然而,一种普遍为人们所接受的理论是:宇宙起源于一次大爆炸,这次大爆炸将物质投射到四面八方”可知应选B项。2C根据句意“地球(开始)变得激烈动荡,因此不知道这个固体形状是否
