introductiongua sha is a movie about the value differences between american and chinese. xu datong is a video games designer in st. louis. when his father visits from china, he performs gua sha (a chinese traditional treatment) on his grandson, which leaves bright red marks on the skin and causes a lawsuit of child abuse. in the court, datong loses his mind so that finally he loses custody of his son. i think this scene is shocking and thought-provoking to most of the chinese audiences. but the most impressing scene to me is the ending. datong wants to see his son on christmas eve. he has to climb a pipe to the ninth floor where his son lives for he is refused to come in the building from the door. i think the pipe is not only a pipe, but also a gap, a deep gap between american and 5000-year chinese culture. he wants to climb over the gap but he wills never success, perhaps no chinese people really could success. what surprises us in the film are not only because it suggested that the cultural differences between countries, a reminder of cultural introspection, but also its delicate touching story. chinese films in general blur in the commercial value and cultural connotation of the time, it appears, indicates a combination of all points of chinese. over the gua sha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden board repeatedly slides across the patients acupuncture acupressure massage points. it works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. this method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, the visiting grandpa who does not speak any english uses this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both his son and daughter-in-law are at work. sadly, in us, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between values. if an acupuncturist is trained in classical chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness.guasha is really a depressive movie. it depresses me much more than cultural crash. cultural crash talks about the racial discrimination, a serious issues, while this talks about value shock, even more serious, maybe. as well, it shocks me more. therere a lot of conflicts in this movie. datong is the central character. his words, his actions and his thought way, all represent the chinese traditional values. he is the typical that the director chose to express the theme. all conflicts are focus on him. on him, we can see the value shock. 2. the background of the film the treatment (guasha)director zheng xiaolong, said: different countries, different ethnic cultures are not good or bad points. or no difference between high and low, but a nations cultural awareness and cultural tolerance, is a very important matter. an american audience says to me: no culture, no cultural heritage of the nation, is a disgrace. “the film from all angles of a persons integrity, human dignity, with excellent film concerns the criteria. chaplin has consistently held that tragedy and comedy are actually inseparable from. and gua sha, in spite of the hollywood-style happy ending comedy, but the drama has been a day filled with laughter. american culture in the elements of concerning, at this time is very pale, from the apartment security he will know as early as climbing, i let him get the phrase is interpreted, and chine-ling for quinlan do not understand the datong scrapping for the recognition of the father replies: because he is chinese,” which also underscores the need for china and the united states between the cultural differences. 3. value differences between china and america values are deeply held beliefs-usually based on cultural traditions, long-held family and religious teachings and long-lasting memories of personal experiences. given their sources, peoples values seldom change, even when their more superficial desires, for instance, their interests, are modified. asking someone to adjust his values is like asking him to alter his sense of reality, explain mediators susan carpenter and w.j.d. kennedy. while this can happen, it doesnt happen often or easily. for this reason, values usually cannot be negotiated, nor can they be changed through persuasive arguments.value conflicts are even more difficult to deal with because the people in conflict may not only disagree about the substance of a dispute, but they will often disagree about the appropriate method of dispute resolution or dispute management as well. given the lack of agreement on both process and substance, parties involved in value conflicts tend to turn to force-based conflict options more often than negotiation or persuasive approaches, because force seems to be the only common language that both sides understand and honor.3.1. value difference in education da tongs love for his son is tested severely when da tong tries to balance it against respect for his boss. when da tongs son hits his boss son, da tong insists on an apology that seems unnecessary and makes da tong look stubborn and uncaring. da tong gives his boy a light rap on the head when he refuses to apologize and the boy cries to his mother that the reason he hit his playmate was that the other boy calls da tong stupid. this is one of many examples of doing the wrong thing to protect his family. da tong tells his boss that hi is not stupid to do that but just want to give him face for in china it is very normal to educate his son or daughter when they refused to follow them through any ways even beating. however, his boss is so surprised and he think it is the criteria of abusing children. the conflict happens on the using languages between the different generations, the ways of teaching children. of course, the main one is chinese traditional values and american ones. there are many differences between china and america on how to treat their children. in the movie, datong beats his sons head because his son fights with his bosss son, and his son refuses to make apologize to that child, though that child abuses dennis in advance. in china, children fight with each other though the parents regard it as the childrens nature, we always say that the child is not sensible. the children need the parents to conduct and foster, why does he sensible? chinese often use the value system to guide their behavior, including the relationship between the family and the other things. in us, children have independent personality. what he or she does should be fostered and protected. the western culture worship individualism, when children grow up they will leave their parents to start their own lives. yet in china, except for the blood relationship, people have the deeply human feelings. so in the movie, when datong supports his father with his hand slowly go stairs, while his boss looks them have another implication.3.2. value difference in traditional culture in the public hearing, the lawyer of the opposite side misinterpreted to the chinese famous works “golden monkey king”, because some americans do not realize the chinese traditional culture. the monkey king represents the chinese traditional value system and morals standard. he is clear on whom to love and whom to hate; he likes uphold justice and interfere on behalf of the injured party. but the lawyer of the opposite side misinterpret that monkey king is the embodiment of the violence. actually, he is the embodiment of the justice. so, effect on the monkey king, datong beat his son, denies, because denies beat datongs bosss son. so they think there has something wrong about datong educating child. actually, the monkey king is the embodiment of the justice.3.3. value difference in individualism and collectivism in chinas traditional culture, we always emphasized the overall neglect of individuals, in the mode of action and ways of thinking on the more collective asking people to obey the established norms and standards. from the person, one birth, the family has become his whole life. one of the most important; he should consciously accept a large number of house rules family laws. moreover, in chinese family, the parents become the symbol of authority, and the general education children by him come forward. therefore, in the eyes of the chinese people, through such means as education, child maltreatment only normal but this is a family affair, outsiders can not be intervention. however, in order to individualistic values-led western countries, peoples thoughts on the coming 180-degree have changed. they believe that the child is a separate entity, with the same adults have equal status and rights, and they deserve equal respect. so what happens once the family caused injury to them, more than the limits of morality, it is necessary to intervene to deal with the community to fight for their deserved human rights. in the film, we see that when da tong to make his son dennis to admit, when paul was beaten in front of the education children, the united states cast his wife has strange eyes. when da tong hears of dennis in kindergarten again, fight with paul, he says: they fight it? but the other parent has countered: its not them that your son hit my son. these classic action and statements make people feel different from collectivism and individualism. 3.4 .value difference in relationships in dealing with interpersonal relationships, the main theme of american culture is individualism, while the main theme of chinese culture and human relations based. in short, individualism is a prominent individual, the individual as the center, and conversation, work style, as long as no prejudice of others, all from the personal autonomy and have worked for. human relations can be said based group-based, or for a more modern parlance, that is, collectivism, a person speak and act, always in order not to undermine relations between groups as a precondition. a person what to do, is often subject to specific groups of categories and hierarchy. in the united states in family relationships, personal interests and aspirations are the first. the no self-control children are not allowed to be left alone at home, can not be beat and scolded. on the other hand, the family is chinese culture, the basic unit of development and carriers. in the film gua sha, da tong says that the son is a continuation of his life, and all of his copyright, which all reflects the traditional chinese view of some aspects of the family. chinese families emphasize family and the love of blood. child welfare in the face of allegations that he abuses his son, da tong feels that the allegations are incredible. his wife, jane lai said: my father loved his son, a matter of course and need evidence, issued a statement? you do not feel absurd?. obey their parents is an important aspect of family morality. in the film, da tong admitted that he scrapping on his son to the judge for he wants his father can get the green card. later, in order to prevent his father worried that his father has been hiding all ta tung. in order to fulfill their filial duties road, ta tung to bear charges for the father and fathers behavior and concealing the fact that the united states to respect the legal awareness of the fact that contrary to. americans can not understand the chinese peoples filial piety concept. in the united states, this dynamic society, too many friends willing to assume the obligations of friends doing things in order is the law, reason and human feeling. chinese society is relatively stable. it is generally reluctant to contacts and exchanges with strangers, friends and pay attention to the longer, and the better obligations. the ideal scenario is for a friend liangleichadao in chinese, through fire and water without any hesitation. in the film, da tong in the face of quinlan the first hearing when he is the intellectual property law quinlan lawyer, simply because quinlan is his friend, and trusts him. the second hearing, although the performance of the second term decent lawyer, da tong did not believe the family law lawyer, that he let the opposing counsel sullied”. when quinlan goes to court to testify that xu datong abuse his son, da tong is very angry that quinlan has betrayed them. quinlan says: difference does not get along with seeking. united states results in a different view of this friends friendship of the rupture. 3.5. value difference in medicine guasha is a treatment in traditional oriental medicine in which a wooden boar repeatedly slides across the patients acupuncture acupressure massage points. it works in similar principles like that of acupuncture acupressure massage. this method would inevitably leave bruise on the skin, and the story begins here, when the visiting grandpa who does not speak any english uses this traditional practice to treat the grandson when both his son and daughter-in-law are at work. sadly, in us, this is a story that repeats itself many times in the area where many oriental immigrants lives and all of these are due to simple misunderstanding between cultures. if an acupuncturist is trained in classical chinese medicine, they will do this technique in their practice for pain, and for acute or chronic illness.3.6. value difference in family family is playing the most important role in chinese inner heart. it has existed in ancient chinese cultural form. due to the broken family for a time, datong have shake and escaped:” i am always seem here. at last my family may reunite when we went back to beijing.” it is the human relationships that the family is not exist, so peoples great ambitions will disappear at once. emotion is another understanding level in this film. it includes the love between father and son, mother and son, couple, grandfather and grandson and friends. but the love between father and son is the main aspect in this film. there are two pairs of father and son. three generations, but their love is communicating with each other. datongs monologue represents each fathers mind in the court. “now i do not think so, i just hope him all is well, happiness, health, and joyful. i am proud of being a father. i love my son exceed everything like each fathers.” and datongs father writes to him “i have nothing to search, just hope for your family all is well” both they used “all is well”. we think that is the best expression about the love between father and son.4. cultural conflicts between china and americathe cultural difference is objective, but it should be decided by human that they how to treat it .we can infer from the film that all the conflicts will be solved as long as the young chinese couple could find something to prove guasha is a treatment in chinese traditional oriental medicine. while, its not very difficult. but the key point of guasha developing the cultural conflict is americans are deceived by their inborn pride and prejudice because they do not understand chinese culture and chinese medicine. it is so incredible that officials assume datong is guilty and searches for so-called evidence before they do not comprehend the situation. the lawyer and the woman (who beards witness in a law court) cherish strongly ethnics emotion. they do not want to understand datong at all. at last, the value differences develop the value conflict because of this kind of pride and prejudice. it is a pity! the most important in an objective treatment of cultural background and the new environment is understanding culture shock. there is a great difference in knowing. what causes the trouble is due to they own lack of understanding of other peoples cultural background and lack of the means of communication rather than the hostility of an alien environment. we also realize that we can gain this understanding and these means of communication. and the sooner we do this, the sooner the culture shock disappears. 5 .conclusion there are many differences between china and america such as in the field of geography, culture language, politics, economy and education with the development of science and technology. the world gets even smaller and the communication between them is more frequent. our country, china, absorbs the essence and does not eliminate the bad thing. because a proverb ever since says when the fresh air comes in, the flies will also accompany it. at times we
