Today,PresidentvonderLeyenhasconvenedkeyEuropeanindustryleaders,socialpartners,andstakeholdersforthelaunchoftheStrategicDialogueontheFutureoftheEuropeanAutomotive

Industry.ThisdialoguemarksthestartofaninclusiveandcollaborativeprocessaimedataddressingcriticalchallengesfacingthesectorandensuringitscontinuedsuccessasamajordriveroftheEuropeaneconomy.

CommissionPresident,UrsulavonderLeyen,said:"TheEuropeanautomotiveindustryisatapivotalmoment,andweacknowledgethechallengesitfaces.Thatiswhyweareactingswiftlytoaddress

them.Thefundamentalquestionweneedtoanswertogetheriswhatwestillmisstounleashthe

innovativepowerofourcompaniesandensurearobustandsustainableautomotivesector.Today

marksthebeginningofadialoguethatwillhelpusnavigatethechangesahead.TheoutcomeofthisdialoguewillbeacomprehensiveActionPlan,whichwewillpresentonMarch5th.ThisActionPlanwillchartaclearcoursetoensureourindustrycanthriveinEuropeandcompetesuccessfullyonaglobalstage."

TheautomotiveindustryisavitalengineforEuropeanprosperity,supportingover13milliondirect

andindirectjobsandcontributingapproximately€1trilliontoourgrossdomesticproduct.Beyondtheeconomicimpact,theindustryensuresthesafeandaffordablemobilityofourcitizensandbusinesses,producingproductsthataregloballyadmired.

TheEuropeanautomotiveandsupplierindustryisundergoingaprofoundandtransformativeshift.

TheCommissionacknowledgestheurgentneedtotakemeasuresthatwillbothprotecttheEuropeanautomotiveindustryandensureitscontinuedprosperitywithintheEuropeanUnion.Inthiscontext,

PresidentvonderLeyenhastaskedCommissionerTzitzikostastopresentanActionPlanonthe5thofMarch.

TheActionPlanwilladdressabroadrangeofissuesrelevantforthesector,suchasensuringaccesstotalentandresources,fosteringtechnologicalinnovationandthedevelopmentofnext-generationvehicles,andestablishingapragmaticandpredictableregulatoryframework.Itwillbebasedon:

.Today'shigh-leveldiscussion,inwhich

fromtheautomotivesectoractively

participated.Today'sdiscussionsfocusonthemainareasthatrequireurgentattention,

includingtheneedforaninternational‘levelplayingfield',facilitatethecleantransitionand

regulatorystreamlining,aswellasidentifyingareaswheremoreconcretemeasuresareneeded.

.Apublicconsultation,whichisbeinglaunchedtodaytogatherwiderinputonchallengesandpotentialsolutionsfromallinterestedparties,and;

.fourthematicworkstrands,wherethePresidenthasmandatedfourCommissionerstoleadfocuseddiscussionsonkeytopicswithadiversegroupofstakeholdersfromtheautomotivesectorvaluechain.Morespecifically:

。CommissionerHoekstrawillfocusontheCleanTransitionoftheautomotivesector.

。CommissionerSéjournéwilladdresstheIndustrialValueChainfortheindustry.

。CommissionerVirkkunenwilloverseediscussionsonTechnologicalandDigitalInnovation.

。CommissionerMînzatuwillleadonSkillsandSocialconsiderationswithinthesector.

TheoutputofthisconsultativeprocesswillinspiretheActionPlan,tobepresentedbyCommissionerTzitzikostas.

TheCouncilandEuropeanParliamentwillbecloselyinvolvedintheprocessandwillberegularlyinformedandconsultedontheDialogue.
