China'sWarofResistanceAgainstJapanwasanimportantpartofthewaragainst

aggressionWagedbypeoplethroughouttheworld,andtheChinatheaterwasamajor

theaterofdecisiveimportancetoWorldWarU.China'sWarofResistancestrongly

supportedtheanti-FasciststruggleintheEuropeanandPacifictheaters,disruptedthe

overallplanoftheJapaneseimperialistswhoattemptedtodominatetheworld,thwarted

Japan's"northernmarch"plottoinvadetheSovietUnion,anddelayedits"southern

march"scheduleforunleashingthePacificWar.Moreimportantstill,theChinesepeople

throughgreatsacrificespinneddownJapan'smilliontroopsontheChinesebaltlefrontso

thatitcouldnotenhanceitsmilitaryforcesintheFarEastandthePacificOcean.Asa

result,itgreatlyreducedthepressureontheAlliedforces.WhenthePacificWarbroke

out,Japan'smilitarystrengthtotaled2.1millionsoldiers,ofwhich1.4millionweresent

totheChinesetheater.Atthistimelessthan400,000Japanesesoldierswerefightingon

theseveralmillion-square-kilometerPacificbattlefield.Thus,67percentofthetotal

JapanesemilitarystrengthwastiedupinChinaduringthemostdangerousperiodofthe

PacificWar.Inotherwords,theJapanesemilitaryforcethatChina(onenation)resisted

trebledwhatmorethan1()nationsheadedbytheUnitedStatesresisted.Theleadersof

theAlliesknewthiswell.FranklinD.Roosevelt,thenUSPresident,oncecommented

thatwithoutChina,orifChinahadbeendefeated,manymoreJapanesedivisionswould

havebeendeployedtootherareasandtheywouldhavebeenabletooccupyAustraliaand

Indiaimmediatelywithoutanytrouble,andthenpushtotheMiddleEast.Inthespringof

1942,theUnitedStatesproposedtoestablishaChinaWarZone,andinvitedChiangKai-

shektobethesupremecommander.TheChinaWarZoneconsistedoftheChinaproper,

aswellasVietNam,Thailand,Burma(nowMyanmar),etc.,aclearindicationthatthe

AlliesreliedheavilyonChina.Becauseofthis,onNewYear'sDay,1942,theUnited

States,BritainandtheSovietUnionunitedwithChina,andissuedtheUnitedNations

Declaration.Thus,Chinabecameoneofthefourmajoranti-Fascistpowers.InDecember
