Introductionandobjectives

ThePICMG®3.1specificationisamemberofthePICMG3AdvancedTCA™seriesofspecifications.Thebasespecificationinthefamily,PICMG3.0,isrequiredtounderstandthisspecification.ThePICMG3.0basespecificationimplementsaplug-incard&chassisarchitecturewheretheplug-incardsallhavepoint-to-pointdifferentialpairserial-datalinkstocommunicatewitheachother.Thebasedesignissufficientlygenericthatitcanaccommodatemanydifferentlink-levelstandards.PICMG3.1establishestheusageofEthernet(IEEE802.3)andFibreChannel(NCITST11)communicationwithintheAdvancedTCA™chassis.

EthernetisahighlysuccessfulLAN(LocalAreaNetwork)standardwithsupportfromawidearrayofsilicon,board,andsoftwarevendors.OriginallydevelopedbyaconsortiumconsistingofDigitalEquipmentCorporation,Intel,andXerox(“DIX”)itwaseventuallystandardizedin1983.Higherspeedsofoperationandothernewcapabilitieshavebeendefinedandincorporatedintothestandardovertheyears.IEEE802.3anditsamendmentsareapprovedasnationalstandardsbyANSI,andinternationalstandardsbyISO,althoughtheseapprovalswilllagfromIEEEStandardsAssociationapproval.TheinternationalstandardsarepublishedasISO/IEC8802-3.TheEthernetstandardsreferredtobyPICMG3.1arelistedinSection

FibreChannelhasbecomeaverypopularstandardfortheconnectionofdiskmediastoragesystemswithprocessorstoformSANs(StorageAreaNetworks).IthasbeenincorporatedintoPICMG3.1toallowthedevelopmentofchassisunitswithmassstorageinadditiontoprocessingandswitching.

PICMG3.1supportsaFibreChannelPortasFC-PI.ThedefaultforaFC-PIPortis1Gig/s,howeverifbothendshaveautonegotiationimplemented,adatarateof2Gig/scanbeachieved.Ingeneral,theuseofFibreChannelisexpectedtobeusedinparallelwithEthernet,althoughPICMG

3.1doesnotprecludetheuseofFibreChannelonly.

Itisexpectedthat10GigabitEthernet,whenfullydeveloped,willincludethecapabilityofintegratingboththeSANandtheLANfunction.PICMG3.1supports10GigabitEthernetviaAdvancedTCA™channelsusingXAUIsignaling.

AsimilararchitecturetoPICMG3.1(forEthernetonly)wasdevelopedbythePICMG2.16sub-committee,whoseRevision1.0standardwaspublishedonSeptember5,2001.ManyofthemembersofthePICMG2.16sub-committeearenowparticipatinginthePICMG3.1sub-committee.

Objectives

Thespecificationinthisdocumentiswhollyderivedfromandisdependentupon,thePICMG3.0basespecification.Itisnotintendedtostand-aloneortobeusedseparatelyfromthebasespecification.

PICMG3.1buildsuponthePICMG3.0basespecification,theIEEE802.3-2003specificationsaswellastheFibreChannelFC-PIspecifications,tomeetthefollowingobjectives:

DefinethesignalstobeusedoverthedatalinkchannelsprovidedbyPICMG3.0basedonEthernet/FibreChannel-compatibledevices.

TwostateswheresystemmanageabilityismostevidentinitsinteractionwiththeEthernet/FibreChannelsignalingare:

ThearchitectureofthecontrolinterfacebetweensystemmanagementandtheEthernet/FibreChannelimplementationisbasedoneventmessaging.EventmessagingisusedtofacilitatebothElectronic-Keying(E-Keying)andpowerstateprotocolprocesses.Ultimately,theactionstakenbytheNodeandHubBoards,inordertocomplywiththeE-Keyingandpowermanagementmessages,areimplementationdependent.PleaserefertoSection3ofPICMG3.0forfurtherdetailsonE-Keyingandpowermanagement.

PICMG3.1compliantconnectionsshallsupportE-KeyingbetweentheShelfManagerandtheIPMController.

PICMG3.1compliantdesignsshalladheretotherequirementsofthePICMG3.0basespecification,Section3.ThemostnoteworthyrequirementspertaintoE-Keying,powermanagement,andtheexistenceofanIPMControlleronthenodeandHubboards.Further,compliantdesignsshallhavethecapabilitytorespondtotheSetPortState(Disable)command.

Messagingalgorithm

UpondetectionofaHuborNodeBoardduringthepower-onstateorBoardinsertion,theLinkDesignator,LinkType,LinkExtension,andLinkGroupingarereadbythetheShelfManagerfromFRUinformation.TheShelfManagerdeterminesifthePortpartnersarecompatible,returningamessageviatheIPMB-0managementbustotheIPMControllerontherespectiveHuborNodeBoard.TheShelfManagerdeterminationofmatchingportsisbasedonacomparisonofeachoftheLinkDescriptorfields.Uponidentifyingamatch,aneventmessageisreturnedtotheIPMController,statingthattheLinkshouldbeenabledordisabledaugmentedwithadescriptionoftheChannelcapabilitiesrequired.ThisprocessisdetailedinSection3,ofthePICMG3.0basespecification.

E-Keyingextensions

TheLinkTypeandLinkDesignator(PortsandChannels)aredefinedwithinthePICMG3.0shelfmanagementsection.OneofthemainunderlyingassumptionsofE-Keyingisthatacapabilitiesdescription(a.k.a.LinkdescriptioncontainedintheFRU)isreadbytheShelfManagerforeveryPortpresentintheChannel.TheLinkDescriptorsaresentinorderofpreference.TheShelfManager

proceedswithitscomparisonofthePortpartner’scapabilities,allbeingreceivedbytheShelfManagerinorderofpreference.TheactualLinksenabledaredeterminedbyapplicationdependentpoliciesimplementedintheShelfManager.
