Inanotherstudy,RosemaryBliezner,aprofessorofhumandevelopmentatVirginiaTechfindsthataging
bringsawealthofexperiencethatenrichesfriendships.Olderadultsknowwhatmattersandwhatdoesn't,making
theminvaluablecompanionswhoofferwisdomwithoutthesmallquarrelsthatoftendestroyyoungerrelationships.

Becausetheharmfromwildfiresmokecanaccumulateandisn'talwaysimmediatelyobvious,thelong-term
risksfromwildfiresmokeexposurehavegoneunderestimated.
TheNBERanalysisusedasuiteofdifferentcomputermodelstofigureouttherelationshipbetweenfireactivity
andhowmuchsmokewasproduced.Inyearslike2020,somenorthernCaliforniacountieswereexposedtodouble
theirnormalpollutionloadfortheyear.Inconditionslikethose,thetotalnumberofdeathsincreasedbyalmost6%.

timesasmuchsmokeastheydidbefore2020.Smoke-relateddeathscouldrisebyatleast8,000peopleeveryyear.
