Overthelate20thandearly21stcenturies,therapidriseinglobalpopulationscombinedwithfallingfertilityrateshas
allowedcountriestobenefitfromtheso-called‘demographicdividend,’wheretheproportionofworkingagepopulations
relativetoolderpopulationsishigh,leadingtogreaterpotentialforcountriestobenefitfromrelativelylargeproductivelabourpools.However,aspopulationscontinuetoageandfertilityratescontinuetodecline,thisisnowleadingtodeclinesinworkingagepopulationsamongstmanymaturingeconomies—drivingold-agedependencyratioshigherand
presentingaDemographicDilemma.1AccordingtothelatestUNdatafromthe2024PopulationProspectreport,the
globalpopulationisexpectedtoriseby~2bnthrough2061butisnowexpectedtopeakearlierthanpreviouslyexpected,withoneinfourpeoplealreadylivingincountrieswherepopulationshavepeaked.
