quarter.While7.6percentofthe13.000peoplesurveyedreporteddepressivesymptoms,just1.5percentof
thechocolateeatersdid.Thestudyalsofoundthatthepeoplewhoconsumedthemostofanychocolate
werealso57percentlesslikelytoreportdepressivesymptoms.
Thestudyisthefirsttoexaminetheassociationwithdepressionaccordingtothetypeofchocolate
consumed.Theteamassesseddatafrom13,626adultsfromtheUSNationalHealthandNutrition
ExaminationSurvey.
Arangeofotherfactorsincludingheight,weight,maritalstatus,education,householdincome,physical
activity,smokingandchronic(慢性的)healthproblemswerealsotakenintoaccounttoensurethestudy
onlymeasuredchocolate'seffectondepressivesymptoms.
Afteradjustingforthesefactors,itwasfoundthatindividualswhoreportedeatinganydarkchocolate
intwo24-hourperiodshad70percentloweroddsofreportingclinicallyrelevantdepressivesymptomsin
theprevioustwoweeksthanthosewhoreportednoteatingchocolateatall.
Chocolatecontainsanumberofpsychoactiveingredients(精神活性成分)whichproduceafeelingof
euphoria(兴奋感)similartothatofcannabinoid(大麻素),foundincannabis.ltalsocontains
p匕enylethylamine(苯丙氨酸),whichisbelievedtobeimportantforregulatingpeople*smoods.
HoweverBritishscientistsurgedcautionaboutthefindings,suggestingthatthedecisiontocatdark
chocolatecouldbelinkedtootherhealthfactors.Forexample,peoplewhochoosedarkchocolatemaybe
morehealth-consciousingeneral,whichisknowntoprotectagainstdepression.
Depressedpeoplearealsomorelikelytodesiremoresugaryfattyfoodsandsocouldbelesslikelyto
pickadarkalternativewhenchoosingchocolate.
