5.1.1Fuelinjectionsystem

1.Injectionsystemoverview

Neartheendofthecompressionstroke,liquidfuelisinjectedasoneormorejets.Theinjectorreceivesfuelatveryhighpressuresinordertoproducerapidinjection,withhighvelocityjet(s)ofsmallcross-sectionalarea.

Thefueljetsentrainairandbreakupintodroplets;thisprovidesrapidmixingwhichisessentialifthecombustionistooccursufficientlyfast.Therewillbelargevariationsinfuel/airmixturesonbothalargeandsmallscalewithinthecombustionchamber.

2.Traditionalinjectionpumps

Thefuelcanbemeteredatahighpressure,asinthecommonrailsystem,oratalowpressure,asinthejerkpumpsystem.

Thejerkpumpsystemaretwoprincipaltypes:in-linepumpsandrotaryordistributorpumps.

3.Fuelinjectornozzles

Nozzleshaveaneedlethatclosesunderaspringloadwhentheyarenotspraying.Theneedle-openingisdeterminedbythespringloadandtheprojectedareaoftheneedle.
