Butsomeoftoday'smostinfluentialfeministscontendthatwomenwillneverfulfilltheirpotentialiftheyplaybymen'srules.AccordingtoAvivahWittenberg-CoxandAlisonMaitland,twoofthemostprominentexponentsofthisposition,itisnotenoughtosmashtheglassceiling.Youneedtoaudittheentirebuildingfor"genderasbestos"—inotherwords,rootouttheinherentsexismbuiltintocorporatestructuresandprocesses.

Manycompaniesareabandoningtheold-fashionedcommitmenttotreatingeverybodyequallyandinsteadbecoming"genderadapted"and"genderbilingual"—intouchwiththeuniquemanagementwisdomoftheirfemaleemployees.Ahostofconsultancieshassprunguptoteachfirmshowtolistentowomenandexploittheirspecialabilities.
Thenewfeministsarerighttobefrustratedaboutthepaceofwomen'sprogressinbusiness.Britain'sEqualityandHumanRightsCommissioncalculatedthat,atthecurrentrateofprogress,itwilltake60yearsforwomentogainequalrepresentationontheboardsoftheFTSE100.Theyarealsorightthatold-fashionedfeminismtooktoolittleaccountofwomen'sroleinraisingchildren.Buttheirargumentsabouttheinnatedifferencesbetweenmenandwomenaresloppyandcounterproductive.
