TherearetwomajorpoliticalpartiesintheUSA,theDemocraticPartyandtheRepublicanParty.Thepoliciesofthetwopartiesarenotbasicallyopposedtooneanother.Insidebothpartiestheremoderatesandright-wringers,thoughtheDemocratsstillhavethereputationofbeingsomewhatmoreliberalthantheRepublicans.Votersareinfluencedbyfamilytraditions,butthereareplentyofordinarypeoplewhovoteaccordingtotheirhopes,fearsandbeliefs.
Therearenootherpoliticalpartiesthatcancompetewiththetwobigparties,thoughthereareoccasionallyindependentswhostandforthepresidencyandmanagetocollectquiteafewvotes.Therearenoleft-wingparties.MostAmericansareinfavoroffreeenterprise,believingthatitmayonedayhelpthemfulfilltheAmericanDream.
