cognitiveabilities.Somestudieshavepointedoutbrain-traininggamesshowweakneareffects.Asforfareffects,
there9snoconvincingevidencethatthishappens.
However,thingsgetinterestingwhenbrain-traininggamesarecomparedwithvideogames.Ina2015study
comparingthebrain-traininggameSmartPwiththevideogameMazix,researchersfoundSmartPplayersdidn'tshow
boostsinproblem-solvingandspatialskills,butMazixplayersdid.
Morerecently,in2020,researchersinSwedenstudieddatafromsome9,000childrenandfoundthatkidsaged
9or10whoplayedvideogamesforabove-averageamountsoftimedidn'tshowanydifferencesinintelligence
comparedwiththoseplayingless.Twoyearslater,theydiscoveredthatby12,thekidsplayingvideogameshad2.5
moreIQpointsthanaverage.
Whyvideogamesresultinimprovementsincognitiveabilitiesovermoretargetedgamesisn'tclear.One
argumentistodowiththeamountoftimeinvested:whereasbrain-trainingappstendtodelivermini-gamesovera
shorttime,videogameshaveplayersengagedandrequiresustainedlevelsofattentionandproblem-solving.Despite
