In1987,duringtheurbanrenewalofJingdezhen,Gongsawporcelainshardsbeingunearthedatarchaeological

excavations(挖掘).Theyexposedhimtothevastgapbetweenmodemporcelaincraftsmanshipandthatofancient

times/4Theglaze(釉)wasassmoothasjade,andtheirbeautywasindescribable,hesays.Thissethimoffona

searchforpaints,materialsandotherelementstomatchhistoricalstandards.

Intheearly1990s,hespentthreeyearsresearchingthecraftsmanshipofblueandwhiteporcelainmadeduring

theMingDynasty.C4Ifoundthattheblueandwhitecolorswerethankstotherichtracemetalelementsintheirraw

materials,whichcamefromtheMiddleEast,^^Gongsays.Later,Gongstudiedhundredsofitemsofblueandwhite

porcelainfromancientimperialkilns,andfoundthatancientpeopleexploredtheuseoflocalplantsandeventually

endupreappearingelsewherefurtherdowntheline,causingnumerousissuesandsymptoms,includingheadaches

andanxiety.^^

Buryingourunfavorableemotionsnotonlyinfluencesourwellbeingbutalsokeepsusfromexperiencingthe

benefitsthatembracingtheseemotionscanbring.Indeed,recognizingandconfrontingunfbrtablefeelings,rather

thandismissingorsuppressingthem,isasignofemotionalhealth.Negativeemotionsaretheretoalertusthat
