ofsubsequentcognitiveimpairmentby35percent;anotherconcludedthatoneinseven

exerciserecommendationsof150minutesperweek.
Theproblemisthattheseobservationalstudiescan'tprovecausation.Maybeexercise

Abetteroptionforestablishingcausalityis3interventionstudy:Assignsome

Theseareverydifficultstudiestorun,sotheytendhavenotmanysubjectsandonlylastfor
afewmonthsoryearsatmost,limitingtheconclusionsthatcan4(draw).
Thenewcriticalreview,publishedinNatureHumanBehaviourbyateamof
researchersinSpainledbyLuisCiriaoftheUniversityofGranada,focusedonlyonthese
morerigorousinterventionstudies.Theyaggregatedtheresultsof109individualtrialswith
atotalof11,2665(participate),andadjustedtheresultstoaccount
6factorslikepublicationbias,whichcouldpredisposeresearchersto
notbotherpublishingnegativeresults.
Theresultswereunderwhelming.Even7themajorityofindividualtrials
hadfoundapositiveeffect,thepooledandadjustedresultsfoundonly“negligible“evidence
ofcognitivebenefits.^Importantly,ourstudydoesnotruleouttheexistenceoftheseeffects/9

suggestinglifelongcognitivebenefitsofbothmoderateandvigorousphysicalactivity.”
Therandomizationeffectivelyoccursatbirth.Somepeoplearebornwithparticular
genevariantsthatpredisposethemtoexercisemoreoverthecourseoftheirlives.Thesegene
variantshavenoknowneffectoncognitivefunction,soifpeoplecarryingthesevariants
scorebetteroncognitivetests,itsuggeststhattheirhigherlevelsofexercisemadethe
difference.
Sureenough,thafswhattheresultsshowed.Inadatabaseof257,000peoplewho
hadundergonegeneticandcognitivetestingforapreviousstudy,thosewhohadgene
