collaborationwithlong-termpartnersandasenseofmutualbenefit.Incontrast,
Westerncarmakerstendedeithertosourcein-houseorawardshortcontractstothe
lowestbidders.ThequalityToyotaanditssuppliersachievedmadepossiblethe
“justintime"approachtodeliveringcomponentstotheassemblyplant.Inhisbook,
MrWomackquotesaToyotasupplier:"Weworkwithoutasafetynet,sowecan't
affordtofalloffthehighwire.Wedon't."
Mostbigcarfirmsnowoperateinasimilarway.Ford,forexample,willoftenwork
withatier-onesupplierforuptothreeyearsbeforeanewmodelcomesoffthe
productionlinetoensurethatthedesignandmanufacturingofimportant
componentsissound.So-calledcross-functionalteamsfrombothfirmsstriveto
eliminatedefects.Ratherthanalwaysgoingforthelowbid,carmakersnowlookat
thetotalcostofacomponent,includingpotentialinterruptionstoproductionand,
furtherdowntheline,customerwarrantyclaimsifqualityisnotuptoscratch.
Byandlarge,therelationshipsbetweentheOEMsandthetier-onesuppliersrun
smoothly.Whenproblemsdocropup,itisusuallywiththetier-twoandtier-three
firms.Aseniorpurchasingexecutiveatonecarmakersaysthatconsolidation,the
needtotrimcapacityandtheshocktodemandthatbeganinmid-2008haveputthe
weakerpartsofthesupplychainundergreatstrain:"Someofthesearequitefragile
