Westerncarmakerstendedeithertosourcein-houseorawardshortcontractstothe

lowestbidders.ThequalityToyotaanditssuppliersachievedmadepossiblethe

“justintime"approachtodeliveringcomponentstotheassemblyplant.Inhisbook,

Byandlarge,therelationshipsbetweentheOEMsandthetier-onesuppliersrun

smoothly.Whenproblemsdocropup,itisusuallywiththetier-twoandtier-three

firms.Aseniorpurchasingexecutiveatonecarmakersaysthatconsolidation,the

needtotrimcapacityandtheshocktodemandthatbeganinmid-2008haveputthe

weakerpartsofthesupplychainundergreatstrain:"Someofthesearequitefragile
