1.MotherTeresa(1910T997)

MotherTeresafoundedtheMissionariesofCharityin1948.Throughit,shehas

dedicatedherlifetohelpingthepoor,thesickandthedyingaroundthe

world,particularlythoseinIndia.ShefoundedtheKalighatHomefortheDyingand

alepercolonywasestablishedunderherguidance.Herselflessworkhasbroughther

manyawards,includingtheNobelPeacePrizein1979.

2.MadameCurie(1867-1934)

MarieCurie,agreatwomanscientist,wasborninPolandin1867.Fromherearly

childhoodMarielovedtostudyandhopedtobecomeascientist.Herinterestin

sciencewasencouragedbyherfather,ateacherofphysics.

In1891,sheleftPolandforFranceandenteredtheUniversityofParis.Fouryears

later,shegraduatedwiththehighestgradeinherclass.Aftergraduationshe

remainedinthesameuniversity,doingscientificresearchwork.Inordertodiscover

somethingthatgaveoffakindofradiation,shedidexperimentsmostcarefullyagain

andagain.Shefailedmanytimes,butshedidn,tloseheart.Finallyin

1902,she,togetherwithherhusband,succeededinfindingtheradioactiveelement一

radium.Owingtotheirachievement,theCuriesreceivedtheNobelPrizeinPhysics

in1903.

In1911,shewonanotherNobelPrize,thistimeallbyherselfinchemistryand

thusshebecamethefirstwomanscientisttowinaNobelawards.

Shediedin1934,obviouslyasaresultoftheeffectsoftheradiationswith

whichsheworkedforover30years.

3.ElizabethFry(May21,1780-October12,1845)

ElizabethFrywasaprisonreformer,socialreformerandphilanthropist.Shewas

borninaQuakerfamilyonMay21,1780.Shetookaninterestinherteenageryears

inthepoor,thesick,andtheprisoners.In1812shefirstvisitedNewgatePrisonin

Londonandwasveryshockedattheconditionsshefoundthere.Fromthenonshebegan

toworktoimproveprisonconditionsinBritain.ShesuppliedthewomenofNewgate

Prisonwithclothesandestablishedaschoolandachapel.In1817ElizabethFryand

elevenothers,formedtheAssociationfortheImprovementoftheFemalePrisoners

inNewgate.ThenextyearshewasinvitedtogiveevidencetoaHouseofCommons

CommitteeonLondonPrisons.Shedescribedindetailthelivesoftheprisoners,and

recommendedthatwomenprisonersshouldbelookedafterbywomeninsteadofmen,and

stressedherbeliefintheimportanceofusefulemployment.Bythe1820sElizabeth

FryandherworkhadbecomeverywellknowninBritain.Shefacedcriticismand

problemsatvarioustimes.ElizabethFry'sworkwasveryimportantbecauseit

startedthemovementforprisonimprovement.Herideawasthatpeopleinprisoncould

notchangetheirwaysandleadusefullivesifyoudidnotgivethemalegalway

ofearningmoney.Sheaimedatchangingtheprisonersbyeducatingthemandchanging

thewaytheyweretreated.Herworkwasmentionedasoneofthereasonsthatthe

QuakersgottheNobelPeacePrizein1947andshewasrememberedinBritainbybeing

putonthenewfivepoundnotein2000.

4.SoongChingling(1893-1981)

SoongChinglingwasoneoftheSoongsisters,alsoknownasMadameSun

Yet-sen.ShewasbornintoarichChristianfamilywhichplayedanimportantrole

inChinesepoliticsinthefirsthalfofthe20thcentury.Sheandhertwosisters

hadagoodeducation.ShewenttostudyinGeorgia,USA.In1915shemarriedDrSun

Yat-sen,founderoftheRepublicofChina.

AfterSun'sdeathin1925,shewaselectedtotheKuomingtangCentralExecutive

Committeein1926.AftertheestablishmentofthePeople'sRepublicofChina,she

becametheVicepresidentofthePeople,sRepublicofChina,headoftheSino-Soviet

FriendshipAssociationandHonoraryPresidentoftheAll-ChinaWomenJs

Federation.In1951shewasawardedtheSatlinPeacePrize.From1968to1972sheacted

jointlywithDongBiwuasheadofstate.

OnMay16,1981,twoweeksbeforeherdeath,shewasadmittedtotheCommunist

PartyandwasnamedHonoraryPresidentofthePeopleJsRepublicofChina.

5.JaneGoodall

JaneGoodallwasappointedpeacemessengeroftheUnitedNations(联合国和平

使者)onApril16,2002.Shewasfamousforhercreativeworkstarted42yearsago

inprotectingchimpanzeesinTanzania.Goodal1wenttoTanzaniaandstudiedchimps

wasspentfollowingandrecordingthesociallifeandrelationshipsofthechimps.Her

suppliesandthecareofherbasecampweremanagedbyherAfricanhelpers.Jane

uncoveredmanyaspectsofchimpanzeebehaviourduringherfirstyearsintheGombe

NationalPark.Becauseofherresearch,wenowknowthatchimpanzeeshuntformeat,use

tools,andhavedifferentpersonalities.

In1965,JaneearnedherPhDinEthologyfromCambridgeUniversity.Soonshe

returnedtoTanzaniatocontinueherresearchandtoestablisharesearch

center.Later,shebecametheScientificDirectoroftheGombeStreamResearch

Centre,Tanzania.In1977,JanefoundedtheJaneGoodallInstituteforWildlife

Research,EducationandConservation,USAtoprovidesupportforfieldresearchon

wildchimpsandencouragewildliferesearch.

6.JodyWilliams(1950-USA)

JodyWilliamswasbornintheUnitedStatesin1950.AftershegotherMaster?s

degreeofArts,shewenttoworkfortwoyearsasalanguageteacherinMexico,where

sheforthefirsttimesawthemiserablelifeofthepoor.Shehasworkedformany

yearstohelppeopleinSouthAmericabyorganizingmedicalcare(MedicalAidfor

ElSalvador)andeducation(Nicaragua-HondurasEducationProject).In1992shebegan

toorganizetheInternationalCampaigntoBanLandmines(ICBL).AsanICBL

coordinator,shehaswrittenandspokenextensivelyontheproblemoflandminesand

themovementtobanthem.Sheworkedwithgroupsindifferentcountries.In1992she

wasworkingwithsixgroupsbutby1997morethan1000groupsfromoversixty

countrieshadjoinedICBL.Althoughtheorganizationbecameverylarge,thefriendly

wayoforganizingICBLcontinuedandhasprovedverysuccessful.Workingina

unprecedentedcooperativewaywithgovernmentsandotherinternationalgroups,the

ICBLachieveditsgoalofaninternationaltreatybanninglandminesduringthe

diplomaticconferenceheldinOsloinSeptember1997.In1997ICBLwasgiventheNobel

PeacePrizeandtheworkofJodyWilliamswasrecognizedandrewarded.Shestillworks

forICBLtoday.

7.JoanofArc(1412-1431)

JoanofArcwasborninthesmallvillageofDomremyinFrance.Shelivedatthe

timewhentherewasawarbetweenEnglandandFrancecalled“TheHundredYears

War,,.JoanofArcwasimportantbecausesheencouragedtheoldFrenchking'sson,the

Dauphin,tobecrownedinRheimsastheonlyKingofFrance.TheFrenchpeopleaccepted

himasthetruekingofFrance.JoanalsoshowedtheFrencharmyhowtowinbattles

andinspiredthemwiththeconfidencetowin.SoJoanofArcbegantheprocessby

whichtheEnglishleftFranceanditbecameacountryinitsownright.

AtthetimeJoanliveditwasconsideredwrongforwomentofightinthearmy.But
