English.WebsterwasbominConnecticutin1758andgraduatedfromYaleuniversityin1778.

DuringthetimeoftheAmericanRevolution,WebsterjoinedGeorgeWashington*sarmytofight

againsttheBritish.Theendofthewarbroughtindependence,butpoliticalindependencedidn't

satisfyWebster.HewantedindependenceinlanguagefromBritishaswell.In1783,Webster

publishedaspellingbook.Itlaterbecameknowntogenerationsofschool-childrenasthe

“blue-backedbook“becauseofitsbluecover.Acoupleofyearslater,hepublishedhisdictionary.

ItisforhisdictionarythatWebsterischieflyrememberedtoday.InhisdictionaryWebstermade

manychangesinthewayEnglishwasusedintheUnitedStates.Mostofthechanges,though,
