JohnvonNeumannwastheoldestof3childrenofabanker,andhisspeedoflearning

newideasandofsolvingproblemsstoodoutearly.At17,hisfathertriedtopersuade

oneoftheothers)intheSchoolofMathematics.

WorldWarIIhugelychangedvonNeumann'sareasofinterest.Until1940hehad

beenagreatpure(纯粹的)mathematician.Duringandafterthewar,hebecameoneof

thebestmathematicianswhoputmathematicstheoriesintopractice.Duringthelast

partofthewarhebecameinterestedincomputingmachinesandmadeseveralfundamental
