ThisStandardwaspreparedbytheJointStandardsAustralia/StandardsNewZealandCommitteeBD/21,Windows,tosupersede,AS2047.1—1996,Windowsinbuildings,Partl:SpecificationformaterialsandperformanceandAS2047.2—1996,Windowsinbuildings—Part2:Construction,installationandmaintenance.Afterallowingsufficienttimeforadjustment(nominally12monthsfrompublication),thesupersededdocumentswillbewithdrawn.
ThisStandardincorporatesAmendmentNo.l(January200l)andAmendmentNo.2(June200l).ThechangesarisingfromtheAmendmentsareindicatedinthetextbyamarginalbarandamendmentnumberagainsttheclause,note,table,figure,orpartthereofaffected.
ThisStandardistheresultofaconsensusamongAustralianandNewZealandrepresentativesontheJointCommitteetoproduceitasanAustralianStandard.
TheobjectiveofthisStandardistoprovidewindowdesignersandmanufacturerswithagenericwindowcode,settingouttheperformancerequirementsandspecificationsinthedesignandmanufactureofallwindows,regardlessofmaterials.
ThisStandardhasbeenrevisedtomakeitsuitableforreferenceintheBuildingCodeofAustralia(BCA)asaStandardforregulatoryreference.
Thewindowratingsystemisasimplifiedsystemandwindowsspecificallydesignedforcornershavebeenomitted(seeAppendixA).
Theeffectsofatmosphericenvironments(corrosionandweathering)onmaterialsusedinwindowassembliesiscurrentlybeingconsideredbytheCommitteemembersforimprovementandinclusioninthenextrevision.
InthisStandard,statementexpressedinmandatorytermsinnotestotablesaredeemedtobeanintegralpartoftheStandard.

SCOPE ThisStandardspecifiesrequirements,materials,construction,installationandglazingfor—

NOTE:Windowwallsdonotincludecurtainwallsusingstackedorverticallysplicedframingsystems,manufacturedfromanymaterialandinstalledinexternalwallsofallclassesofbuildings.
Throughoutthisstandardtheterm‘window(s)’meanswindowofanytype,includinglouvre(s)andslidingdoor(s).

Curtainwall—anon-load-bearingwindowwallthatisnotapanelwall.
Door—aslidingsashofasizesuitableforuseasaccessthroughwalls.
Fenestration—thearrangementofwindowsandotheropeningsontheexternalwallsofbuildings,especiallythefacade.
Fin—apieceofglasspositionedsuchastoprovidelateralsupport.
Fixing—anyitemthatisusedtosecuremembersofawindowassemblytoeachother,tosecureanitemofhardwaretoawindowmember,ortosecureacompletedwindowassemblyintothebuildingstructure.
Flashing—animperviousmembraneinstalledinsuchamannerastopreventingressofwaterintothebuilding.
Frame—thatpartofawindowassemblysurroundingthesashesorfixedglazing.Itisanassemblymanufacturedfromtimber,metal,glass,orotherdurablematerialorcombinationsofmaterials,suchasglassfinsandstructuralsealantformingpartoftheassemblyofaglazedpanelandsupportingthefulllengthofalltheedgesoftheglass.
NOTE:Butt-jointedglasspanelsthatarenotinthesameplanecansatisfytherequirementsforframes.
Glass—ahard,brittle,amorphoussubstanceproducedbyfusionandusuallyconsistingofmutuallydissolvedsilicaorsilicatesthatalsocontainsodaandlime.Itmaybetransparent,translucentoropaque.
Glazingbar—amemberthatisaddedtoastandardwindowconstructiontochangetheappearanceofthewindow.Itcanbeintheforminwhichtheglassisglazed,clipped,orstuckontoeitherorbothfacesoftheglass.
Glazinggasket—plasticorsyntheticrubbermembers,usedbetweentheglassandtheframeortheglassandthebead.
Hardware—equipmentusedintheopening,operating,closing,lockingandstoppingofsashes.
Head—thetophorizontalframingmemberofawindowassembly.
Jamb—averticalsideframingmember.
Light—seewindowlight.
Louvre—awindowunitcomprisingaseriesofbladesofglass,orothermaterial,lappingeachother.
Meetingstiles—verticalintermediatesashmembersthatmeetwhenthewindowisclosedsuchthattheycombinetoactinunison.
Meetingrails—horizontalintermediatesashmembersthatmeetwhenthewindowisclosedsuchthattheycombinetoactinunison
Mullion—averticalintermediateframingmember.
Multi-lightwindow—awindowincorporatingmorethanoneopeningorfixedlight,orboth,withinoneperimeterframe,aslowlights,highlightsorsidelights.
Newton—theforcewhich,whenappliedtoabodyhavingamassofonekilogram,causesanaccelerationofonemetrepersecondsquaredinthedirectionofapplicationoftheforce.
Panelwall—anon-load-bearingwindowwallthatiswhollysupportedateachstorey.
Pascal(Pa)—thepressureorstressthatariseswhenaforceofonenewtonisapplieduniformlyoveranareaofonesquaremetre.
Reveal—thevisiblepartofeachsideofawindowopeningnotcoveredbytheframe,ortherecessbetweentheframeandthefaceofthewall.
Sash—theseparateframe,toawindow,carryingtheglass.Itmaybefixed(inoperable)ormovable(operable).

Stile,sash—averticalsidememberofasash.

Windowrating—aclassificationsystemprovidingforwindowstobetestedtodeterminetheirlevelofperformanceforstrengthandweatherproofness.Windowratingsforhousingareexpressedinwindclassificationterms(seeTable2.1),andwindowratingsforbuildingsotherthanhousingareexpressedinpermissibleorlimitstatedesignwindpressureterms.
Windowwall—aseriesofmulti-lightwindows,generallyspanningfromfloortoceiling,andoftencontinuoushorizontally.
SECTION 2 PERFORMANCE
GENERALThisSectiondetailsperformancecriteriaforwindowassembliesthatareclassifiedbyaratingsystemforhousing,andbydesignwindpressuresforresidentialandcommercialbuildings.
NOTES:
TheperformancelevelsofwindowsgiveninthisSectionaretheresultofmanyyearsoftestingunitsinlaboratoriesandtheevaluationofbuildingsitesafterhighwindsandcyclonesinvariousregionsofAustralia.
Thewindowratings,orclassifications,differfrompreviousglassandwindowStandardsduetothemoreaccurateevaluationoftheeffectofthesewindconditions.TheyarebasedoneitherAS1170.2,orthespecificwindloadingcodedevelopedforhousing,i.e.AS4055.
A12.1.1GenerictimberwindowsWindowsmadetothedetailsinAppendixGaredeemedtocomplywiththeappropriatestructuralperformanceandwaterpenetrationrequirementsofClause2.3.
NOTE:TheobjectiveofincludingthegenerictimberwindowsintheStandard,asanacceptablealternativetoindividualtestingofspecificfabricatorproducts,istoenablesmalljoineriestomanufacturewindowstothegenericdetailshowninAppendixG.
ATMOSPHERICENVIRONMENTSMaterialsshallbecompatiblewiththeatmosphericconditionsofthesite.
NOTE:Corrosionandweatheringofmaterialsusedinwindowassembliescanoccurinatmosphericenvironmentswherethematerialsareincompatiblewiththeenvironmentandotherwindowassemblymaterials,andwithotherbuildingmaterials.
WINDOWPERFORMANCE
Housing
A1GeneralInthisStandard,housingisdefinedasClass1buildingsandClass10buildings,asdescribedintheBuildingCodeofAustralia,andisgovernedbythelimitationsspecifiedinAS4055,exceptthatwindowsinClass10buildingsarenotrequiredtopasstheairinfiltrationandwaterpenetrationrequirementsofthisStandard.
WindowratingsThefollowingshallapply:
WindowassembliesshallberatedasdeterminedinTable2.1andbyachievingthetestresultsdetailedinClausestototheappropriatetestinAS4420,Parts2to6.
Thesupportingmembersshallhavesufficientthicknessofmaterialandstrengthtoensuretheperformanceofthewindow-operatinghardware.

waterthatisnotcontainedinapurpose-builtdrainagearea;
waterthatwetsorislikelytowetinsulation,fixturesandfinishes,revealliningsorwindowfurnishingsbeyondthewindowframe;or

General ThisClausecoversresidentialbuildingsofClass2,Class3andClass4partsofbuildingsasdescribedintheBuildingCodeofAustralia,andClass1buildingsoutsidethelimitationsspecifiedinAS4055.
DesignwindpressureThedesignwindpressureforserviceabilitylimitstateandultimatelimitstate,shallbedeterminedinaccordancewithAS1170.2.Alllocalpressurefactorsandinternalpressurecoefficientsrelevanttothelocationofthewindowonthebuildingshallbeconsidered.
NOTE:AguidetodesignwindpressureisgiveninAppendixA.
Deflection/spanratioWindowsshallbesubjectedtothedeflectiontestinaccordancewithAS4420.2.ThetestpressureshallbethedesignwindpressuresdeterminedinClause.Nostructuralmembersinacompletelyassembledandglazedwindowshalldeflectbyanamountgreaterthanspan/180,whentestedattheserviceabilitylimitstatedesignwindpressure.
OperatingforcetestWindowsshallbesubjectedtotheoperatingforcetestinaccordancewithAS4420.3.ThetestforceshallbenotgreaterthanthevaluegiveninTable2.2.
AirinfiltrationWindowsshallbesubjectedtotheairinfiltrationtestinaccordancewithAS4420.4.TheairinfiltrationshallnotexceedtheamountgiveninTable2.3.
WaterpenetrationWindowsshallbesubjectedtothewaterpenetrationresistancetestinaccordancewithAS4420.5.Thetestpressureshallbecalculatedas30%ofthepositiveserviceabilitylimitstatedesignwindpressure,asdeterminedinClause,butnotlessthan150Pa,andinpositivedirectiononly.Duringthetest

GeneralThisClausecoverscommercialbuildingsofClasses5,6,7,8and9,asdescribedintheBuildingCodeofAustralia.
DesignwindpressureThedesignwindpressureforserviceabilitylimitstateandultimatelimitstate,shallbedeterminedinaccordancewithAS1170.2.Alllocalpressurefactorsandinternalpressurecoefficientsrelevanttothelocationofthewindowonthebuildingshallbeconsidered.
NOTE:AguidetodesignwindpressureisgiveninAppendixA.
Deflection/spanratioWindowsshallbesubjectedtothedeflectiontestinaccordancewithAS4420.2.ThetestpressureshallbethedesignwindpressuredeterminedinClause.Nostructuralmembersinacompletelyassembledandglazedwindowshalldeflectbyanamountgreaterthanspan/250,whentestedattheserviceabilitylimitstatedesignwindpressure.

AirinfiltrationWindowsshallbesubjectedtotheairinfiltrationtestinaccordancewithAS4420.4.TheairinfiltrationshallnotexceedtheamountgiveninTable2.3.
WaterpenetrationWindowsshallbesubjectedtothewaterpenetrationresistancetestinaccordancewithAS4420.5.Thetestpressureshallbecalculatedas30%
A1ofthepositiveserviceabilitylimitstatedesignwindpressure,asdeterminedinClause,butnotlessthan150Pa,andinpositivedirectiononly.Duringthetestthereshallbenopenetrationofuncontrolledwater,asspecifiedinClause.
NOTE:Whentestingawindowforwaterpenetration,whereinsulationisremovedinordertoobservetheindoorsideofthewindow,themanufacturershouldsupplydrawingsindicatingitsintendedlocationinorderthattheresultmaybedetermined.
UltimatestrengthWindowsshallnotcollapsewhensubjectedtotheultimatestrengthtestinaccordancewithAS4420.6.‘Collapse’shallbeasspecifiedinClause.
ThetestpressureshallbenotlessthantheultimatelimitstatedesignwindpressuredeterminedinaccordancewithAS1170.2.Alllocalpressurefactorsandinternalpressurecoefficientsrelevanttothelocationofthewindowonthebuildingshallbeconsidered.
VERIFICATIONOFSMALLERORLARGERSIZEPRODUCTSAS4420.1,generallyrequiresthetestsamplewindowtoberepresentativeinbothsizeandshapeofthelargeststandardassemblyintheproductrangeasspecifiedbythemanufacturer.Wherethesuppliedproductsarenotofthesamesizeasthoseverifiedbytesting,oneofthefollowingshallapply:
Smallersizeproducts(eithershorterornarrower,orboth),whichhavethesameconstruction(fenestration,sectionsandcomponents)asatestedproduct,shallassumethesamerating,providedtheyareinnowaylessfavourablydisposedandareglazedincompliancewithAS1288.
SmallersizeproductsasdescribedinItem(a)shallberatedatahigherdesignwindpressureratingthanthetestedproduct,providedthecalculationsofdeflectionandstressforallstructuralmemberstoarriveatthehigherratingarecertifiedusingtheactualtestdataforthestructuralmembersandprovidedtheyareinnowaylessfavourablydisposedandareglazedincompliancewithAS1288.
Largersizeproducts(eithertallerorwider,orboth),whichhavethesameconstruction(fenestration,sectionsandcomponents)asatestedproductinaccordancewithAS4420.1,shallassumethesameratingorlowerratingasthetestedproduct,providedthecalculationsofdeflectionandstressforallstructuralmemberstoarriveattheratingarecertifiedusingtheactualtestdataforthestructuralmembers,andprovidedtheyareinnowaylessfavourablydisposedandareglazedincompliancewithA
