Asyouallknow,theUnitedStatesisacountryonwheels.Nearlyeightmillion

newcarsaremadeeachyear;fourhouseholdsoutoffiveownatleastonecar,and

intheruralSouthwhenacottonplantationsuddenlycutsitsforcefrom100peopleto

automation.Infact,probably2millionjobsaremadeunnecessaryeachyearinthe

incomeof$3,355ayeartobeabovethelineofpoverty.Andin1977,theaverage

povertylineofthecountrywasslightlymorethan$6,200annualincomefora

non-farmfamilyoffour.AccordingtotheSocialSecurityAct,familiesofthatsize

belowpovertylineareeligibletoreceivebenefitsfromthespecialwelfareprogram.
