WhyCollegeIsNotHome

Thecollegeyearsaresupposedtobeatimeforimportantgrowthinautonomy(自主性)andthedevelopmentof

adultidentity.However,nowtheyarebecominganextendedperiodofadolescence,duringwhichmanyoftoday's

studentsandarenotshoulderedwithadultresponsibilities.

Forpreviousgenerations,collegewasadecisivebreakfromparentalcontrol;guidanceandsupportneededto

comefrompeopleofthesameageandfromwithin.Inthepasttwodecades,however,continuedconnectionwith

anddependenceonfamily,thankstocellphones,emailandsocialmedia,haveincreasedsignificantly.Some

parentsgosofarastohelpwithcoursework.Insteadofpromotingtheideaofcollegeasapassagefromtheshelter

ofthefamilytoautonomyandadultresponsibility,universitieshavegivenintotheideathattheyshouldprovide

thesameenvironmentasthatofthehome.

Toprepareforincreasedautonomyandresponsibility,collegeneedstobeatimeofexplorationand
