hundredsatatime.Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.

Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswhere

passengerpigeonsnestedhadbeendamagedbyAmericans9needforwood,which

scattered(驱散)theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarthernorth,wherecold

temperaturesandspringstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocks

weregone,nevertobeseenagain.
