istellyouastoryabouthowIusedmydeepunderstanding
ofneuroscience,asaprofessorofneuroscience,to
essentiallydoanexperimentonmyselfinwhichIdiscovered
thescienceunderlyingwhyexerciseisthemost
transformativethingthatyoucandoforyourbraintoday.
Now,asaneuroscientist,Iknowthatourbrains,thatisthe
thinginourheadrightnow,thatisthemostcomplex
structureknowntohumankind.Butit'sonethingtotalk
aboutthebrain,andit'sanothertoseeit.

temporallobe,shownrighthere.Youhavetwotemporal
lobesinyourbrain,therightandtheleft,anddeepinthe
temporallobeisakeystructurecriticalforyourabilityto
formandretainnewlong-termmemoriesforfactsandevents.
Andthatstructureiscalledthehippocampus.SoI'vealways
beenfascinatedwiththehippocampus.Howcoulditbethat
aneventthatlastsjustamoment,say,yourfirstkiss,orthe
momentyourfirstchildwasborn,canformamemorythat
haschangedyourbrain,thatlastsanentirelifetime?That's
whatIwanttounderstand.Iwantedtostartandrecordthe
activityofindividualbraincellsinthehippocampusas
subjectswereformingnewmemories.Andessentiallytry
anddecodehowthosebriefburstsofelectricalactivity,
whichishowneuronscommunicatewitheachother,how
thosebriefburstseitherallowedustoformanewmemory,
ordidnot.

memorywork.Anditshouldhavebeengoinggreat.Itwas,
scientifically.ButwhenIstuckmyheadoutofmylabdoor,
Inoticedsomething.Ihadnosociallife.Ispenttoomuch
timelisteningtothosebraincellsinadarkroom,bymyself.
(Laughter)Ididn'tmovemybodyatall.Ihadgained25
pounds.Andactually,ittookmemanyyearstorealizeit,I
wasactuallymiserable.AndIshouldn'tbemiserable.AndI
wentonariver-raftingtrip—bymyself,becauseIhadno
sociallife.AndIcameback—

thatItried,Ihadthisgreatmoodboostandthisgreatenergy
boost.Andthat'swhatkeptmegoingbacktothegym.Well,
Istartedfeelingstronger.Istartedfeelingbetter,Ievenlost
that25pounds.

brain.AndwhatIfoundwasanexcitingandagrowing
literaturethatwasessentiallyshowingeverythingthatI
noticedinmyself.Bettermood,betterenergy,bettermemory,
betterattention.AndthemoreIlearned,themoreIrealized
howpowerfulexercisewas.Whicheventuallyledmetothe
bigdecisiontocompletelyshiftmyresearchfocus.Andso
now,afterseveralyearsofreallyfocusingonthisquestion,
I'vecometothefollowingconclusion:thatexerciseisthe
mosttransformativethingthatyoucandoforyourbrain
todayforthefollowingthreereasons.
