MysubsequentstudiesindicatethatthispoemrepresentspartofthelargerliterarymovementknownasImagism,whichincludedsuchtheoristsandpractitionersasT.E.Hume,HildaDoolittle,AmyLowell,EzraPound,etc.ThemovementwasadirectreactiontothelateVictorianpoetry,whichhadbecomeextremelyartificial,emptily“rhetorical”and“ornamental”。Toaddresssuchproblems,itwasnecessarytoloosenthemetricalpatternandbringitbackclosertotherhythmsofordinaryspeech.Consequently,the“imagist”movementhadagreatdealtodowithpromotingexperimentswithfreeverse,advocatingamongmanycreedstheneed“toallowabsolutefreedominthechoiceofsubject”and“toproducepoetrythatishardandclear,neverblurrednorindefinite.”WhenArchibaldMacLeishsaidinhisArsPoetica(1926)that“Apoemshouldnotmean/Butbe”,hehadsimilarconcernsinhismind.Imagism,minorasitisasaliterarymovement,triggeredimportantchangesinliterarycriticism,introducingthenotionofinternalstudiesasembodiedbyNewCriticismtosubstitutetheconventionalcriticalpractices.

Theforegoingincidentisbutoneinstancethathappenedinmystudyofliterature.ForaChinesestudentlikeme,ithasatleasttwo.First,aliteraryworkmustnotbetreatedinisolation.Itinteractswithwhatiswrittenbeforeitandafteritandthisisonewayinwhichwemayaddtoourinterpretation.Second,itisimportanttobeacquaintedwithrelevantliterarytheorieswheninterpretingagivenliterarywork.

AstudentmajoringinEnglish(&InternationalTrade)attheEnglishDepartmentof_University,Igrewincreasinglyinterestedinliteratureduringthesecondhalfofmyundergraduateprogram.Ofcourse,IwastrainedtobeastudentofEnglishlanguageinthefirstplaceandassuchIreceivedthestandardacademictrainingtypicalofastudentofEnglishmajor.Forthefirsttwoyears,IprimarilyhadintensivetrainingsinbasicEnglishlanguageskillsbyattendingcoursesinadvancedlistening,writing,readingandoralcommunication.Mydistinguishedacademicperformanceisdemonstratedbythefourconsecutivefirst-classandsecond-classscholarshipsIwonfrom1999to20__,Iwasawardedthesecondprizeinthecampus-wideEnglishcompositioncontestandin20__thefirstprizeinthetranslationcontest.AnotherindicatorofmyscholasticachievementsisthehonorofOutstandingGraduateof_ProvincethatIreceivedbythetimeIcompletedmyundergraduateprogram.

IstartedreadingEnglishnovelsassoonasIbeganmyundergraduateIprimarilyuseditasawaytoincreasemyvocabularyandtoimprovemyreadingcomprehension.Sincethesecondyearinmyundergraduateprogram,ourcurriculumincludedfivemajorcoursesrelatedtoAnglo-Americanliteratureandculture:SelectedReadingsinEnglishLiterature,SelectedReadingsinAmericanLiterature,IntroductiontoEuropeanCulture,TheHistoryofEnglishandAmericanLiterature,SelectedReadingsinEnglish&AmericanFictions.ThosecoursesprovidedmewithaculturalandhistoricalframeworkwithwhichtounderstandAnglo-Americanliteratureandtoknowtheirinterrelationships.IgrewfamiliarwithmajorauthorsandworksinBritishandAmericanliteratureandgainedtentativeknowledgeofwesterncriticalapproaches.BookslikeLiteraryTheory—AnIntroductionbyTerryEagletonand20thLiteraryCriticismeditedbyDavidLodgeprovedsomewhatesoterictome,buttheyallowedmetorealizethatthereareimportantcriticalapproachesverydifferentfromthoseinChineseliteratureanddifferentfromconventionalonesinwesternliteratureitself.

MydefininginterestinBritishandAmericanLiteratureledmetowriteaboutT.S.EliotandhispoetryinmythesisDullRootsStirredbytheSpringRain—MeaningThroughImageryinT.S.Eliot's“WasteLand”(availableuponrequest)。Inthisthesis,IexamineddifferentgroupsofimagerythatT.employedtoexternalizehiscentralideasandemotions.Ialsoanalyzedthetheoreticaljustificationsforhisvirtuallyexcessiveuseofimagerybytracingittohistheoryof“ObjectiveCorrelative”thatheproposedinHamletandHisProblems,acriticalessaycontainedinTheSacredWood(1920)。
