thanadults—andininterviewsdidnotexpressanunderstandingofhowfactorssuchascarspeedandfieldofvision

affectcrossingsafety.

Interventionsdoseemtoimprovecrossingsuccess.InMeir'smostrecentstudy,twodozenseven-to

nine-year-oldsreceive40minutesofdanger-detectiontraining.Afterwards,Meircomparedtrainees'andcontrol

kids*performancesinthevirtualroad-crossingtask.Thechildrenwhoreceivedsafetyinstructionswere

significantlybetteratcrossingthanthecontrolsubjects-tothepointthattheircrossingskillsresembledthoseof

adults.

Next,Meirandpolicymakersaimtofigureouthowtotranslatethesefindingsintotherealworld.'Thesekind

learningtosolveit.Sowetestedthreefurthergroupsofbees.Onegroupofbeeswatchedanotherpreviouslytrained

beemovetheballtothecentre.Asecondgroupofbeesobservedtheballmovingtothecentre"byitself(we

actuallyusedamagnet(磁铁)undertheplatfonntomovetheball).Andathirdgroupofbeesdidnotreceiveany

demonstration.

Themovementoftheballwiththemagnetwasenoughforsomeofthebeestolearnthetasksignificantlybetter

thanthebeeswhodidnotreceiveanydemonstration.Butalltenbeesobservinganotherbeemovetheballtothe

centresolvedthetaskmuchquickerandatahighersuccessratethaneitheroftheothergroups.Thissuggeststhe

observerbeespickedupsomethingimportantfromtheirfellowbeesthathelpedthemlearnthisunnaturaltask.
