ISO/IEC14776-153:2015ENInformationtechnology-Smallcomputersysteminterface(SCSI)-Part153:SerialattachedSCSI(SAS)isastandardthatspecifiesthecommunicationprotocolbetweenacomputerandastoragedevice.Itdefinestherequirementsforconnectingandcommunicatingwithaserialattachedstorage(SAS)device.SAS-2.1isaversionofSASthatprovidesfasterdatatransferspeedsandimprovedreliabilityoverearlierversionsofSAS.Itsupportsbothblockdatatransfersandfilesystemdatatransfers.SAS-2.1alsoprovidesenhancedsecurityfeaturessuchasencryptionandauthentication.

ToimplementSAS-2.1,acomputersystemmusthaveaSASinterfaceandaSAScontrollerthatsupportsSAS-2.1.ThestoragedevicemustalsobeaSASdevicethatconformstotheSAS-2.1specification.ThecommunicationbetweenthecomputersystemandthestoragedeviceusestheSASprotocol,whichincludesthefollowingcomponents:

*Physicallayer:Definesthephysicalconnectionsbetweenthecomputersystemandthestoragedevice,aswellasthesignalingandpowerrequirementsfortheconnections.

*Linklayer:Definesthecommunicationsprotocolusedbetweenthephysicallayerandtheupperlayersoftheprotocolstack,includingthetransferofdatapacketsandacknowledgments.

*Transportlayer:Definesthemechanismsfortransportingdatabetweentwocomputersoveranetworkconnection.SAS-2.1supportsbothpoint-to-pointandswitchedtopologiesforthetransportlayer.

*Applicationlayer:Definestheinterfacesbetweenthecomputersystemandthestoragedevice,aswellasthefilesystemandblockstorageinterfacesusedfordataaccess.

SAS-2.1alsoincludesenhancementstoerrorhandlingandfaulttolerance,aswellasimprovementstoperformancemonitoringandreporting.Additionally,SAS-2.1supportsplug-and-playfunctionality,allowingstoragedevicestobequicklyconnectedandconfiguredwithoutrequiringmanualintervention.
