IEC61643-331:2017ENLow-voltagesurgeprotectivedevices(VSRs)aredesignedtoprotectequipmentagainstvoltagesurgesthatoccurwhenlightningstrikesorduetoswitchingoperations.ComponentsforVSRsarestandardizedinthisstandard.Thispartofthestandard,IEC61643-331:2017EN,specifiestheperformancerequirementsandtestmethodsformetaloxidevaristors(MOVs).

MOVsarecapacitorsthatcanbeusedtoabsorbexcessvoltageduringasurge.Theyareusuallyusedinlightningarrestors,wheretheyarepositionedbetweentheliveandgroundterminals.TheMOVcapacitanceishighlynonlinearandrisessharplyastheappliedvoltageincreases,therebyallowingthesurgeenergytobeabsorbedbytheMOV.

Thefollowingarethemainpointstobecoveredinthisstandard:

*MOVspecificationsincludingdesign,materials,dimensions,packagingandinsulationsystemrequirements.

*TheperformancerequirementsofMOVsintermsofsurgevoltagerating,capacitance,currentrating,leakagecurrent,etc.

*TestmethodsforMOVsincludingsetupandequipmentrequirements,proceduresfortesting,datarecordingandanalysis,andvalidationoftestresults.
