被莎拉琼斯仿照的八个国家和地区为:英国、纽约皇后区、澳大利亚、多米尼加、法国、德国、印度、中国、约旦。代表了八种不同的腔调:英音、美音、西班牙音、法语音、德语音、印度音、汉语音、阿拉伯音。

IshouldtellyouthatwhenIwasaskedtobehere,Ithoughttomyselfthatwell,itsTED.AndtheseTEDstersare-youknow,asinnocentasthatnamesounds-thesearethephilanthropistsandartistsandscientistswhosortofshapeourworld.AndwhatcouldIpossiblyhavetosaythatwouldbedistinguishedenoughtojustifymyparticipationinsomethinglikethat?AndsoIthoughtperhapsareallycivilizedsoundingBritishaccentmighthelpthingsabit.

AndthenIthoughtno,no.IshouldjustgetupthereandbemyselfandjusttalkthewayIreallytalkbecause,afterall,thisisthegreatunveiling.AndsoIthoughtIdcomeuphereandunveilmyrealvoicetoyou.AlthoughmanyofyoualreadyknowthatIdospeaktheQueensEnglishbecauseIamfromQueens,NewYork.(Laughter)Butthethemeofthissession,ofcourse,isinvention.AndwhileIdonthaveanypatentsthatImawareof,youwillbemeetingafewofmyinventionstoday.AndIsupposeitsfairtosaythatIaminterestedintheinventionofselforselves.Wereallbornintocertaincircumstanceswithparticularphysicaltraits,uniquedevelopmentalexperiences,geographicalandhistoricalcontexts.Butthenwhat?Towhatextentdoweself-construct,doweself-invent?Howdoweself-identifyandhowmutableisthatidentity?Like,whatifonecouldbeanyoneatanytime?Wellmycharacters,liketheonesinmyshows,allowmetoplaywiththespacesbetweenthosequestions.AndsoIvebroughtacoupleofthemwithme.Andwell,theyreveryexcited.WhatIshouldtellyou--whatIshouldtellyouisthattheyveeachpreparedtheirownlittleTEDtalks.SofeelfreetothinkofthisasSarahUniversity.(Laughter)

Okay.Okay.Oh,well.Oh,wonderful.Goodeveningeverybody.Thankyousoverymuchforhavingmeheretoday.Ah,thankyouverymuch.MynameisLoraineLevine.Ohmy!Theressomanyofyou.Hisweetheart.Okay.(Laughter)Anyway,Iamherebecauseofayounggirl,SarahJones.Shesaverynice,young,blackgirl.Wellyouknow,shecallsherselfblack,shesreallymorelikeacaramelcolorifyoulookather.Butanyway,(Laughter)shehasmeherebecausesheputsmeinhershow,whatshecallsherone-womanshow.Andyouknowwhatthatmeans,ofcourse.Thatmeansshetakesthecreditandthenmakesuscomeouthereanddoallthework.ButIdontmind.

Frankly,Imkvellingjusttobeherewithalltheluminariesyouhaveattendingsomethinglikethis,youknow.Really,itsamazing.Notonly,ofcourse,thescientistsandallthewonderfulgiantsoftheindustriesbutthecelebrities.Therearesomanycelebritiesrunningaroundhere.Isaw--GlennCloseIsawearlier.Iloveher.AndshewasgettingayogurtintheGooglecafe.Isntthatadorable.(Laughter)Somanyothersyousee,theyrejustwonderful.Itslovelytoknowtheyreconcerned,youknow.And--oh,IsawGoldieHawn.Oh,GoldieHawn.Iloveher,too;sheswonderful.Yeah.Youknow,shesonlyhalfJewish.Didyouknowthatabouther?Yeah.Butevenso,awonderfultalent.AndI--youknow,whenIsawher,suchawonderfulfeeling.Yeah,sheslovely.Butanyway,IshouldhavestartedbysayingjusthowluckyIfeel.Itssuchaneye-openingexperiencetobehere.Youreallsoresponsibleforthisworldthatweliveintoday.Youknow,Icouldnthavedreamedofsuchathingasayounggirl.Andyouveallmadetheseadvancementshappeninsuchashorttime.Youreallsoyoung.Youknow,youreparentsmustbeveryproud.

Ijust--Imsorry.Imjusttryingnottobenervousbecausethisisaverywonderfulexperienceformeandeverything.AndIjust--youknowImnotusedtodoingpublicspeaking.AndwheneverIgetnervousIstarttotalkreallyfast.NobodycanunderstandnothingImsaying,whichisveryfrustratingforme,asyoucanimagine.Iusuallyhavetojustliketrytocalmdownandtakeadeepbreath.Butthenontopofthat,youknow,SarahJonestoldmeweonlyhave18minutes.SothenImlike,shouldIbenervous,youknow,becausemaybeitsbetter.AndImjusttryingnottopanicandfreakout.SoIlike,takeadeepbreath.

Butlikeevenatmyjob--like,Ijustgotpromoted.RightnowitsveryexcitingactuallyformebecauseImtheJuniorAssistanttotheAssociateDirectorundertheSeniorVicePresidentforBusinessDevelopment.Thatsmynewtitle.So,butIthinkwhetheryouownyourowncompanyoryourejuststartingoutlikeme,likesomethinglikethissovitalforpeopletojustcontinueexpandingtheirmindsandlearning.Andifeverybody,likeallpeoplereallyhadaccesstothat,itwouldbeaverydifferentworldoutthere,asIknowyouknow.So,Ithinkallpeople,weneedthat,butespecially,Ilookatpeoplelikeme,youknowlike,Imean,Latinos,wereabouttobethemajority,inliketwoweeks.So,wedeservejustasmuchtobepartoftheexchangeofideasaseverybodyelse.So,Imveryhappythatyoure,youknow,doingthiskindofthing,makingthetalksavailableonline.Thatsverygood.Ilovethat.AndIjust--Iloveyouguys.IloveTED.Andifyoudontmind,privatelynow,inthefuture,ImgoingtothinkofTEDasanacronymforTechnology,EntertainmentandDominicans.Thankyouverymuch.(Laughter)(Applause)

So,thatwasNoraida,andjustlikeLoraineandeverybodyelseyouremeetingtoday,thesearefolkswhoarebasedonrealpeoplefrommyreallife.Friends,neighbors,familymembers.Icomefromamulticulturalfamily.Infact,theolderladyyoujustmet,very,verylooselybasedonagreatauntonmymothersside.Itsalongstory,believeme.Butontopofmyfamilybackground,myparentsalsosentmetoUnitedNationsschool,whereIencounteredaplethoraofnewcharactersincludingAlexandre,myFrenchteacher,okay.

Well,youknow,itwasbeginnerFrench,thatIamtakingwithher,youknow.AnditwasMadameBousson,youknow,shewasvery[French].Itwaslike,youknow,shewasthereintheclass,youknow,shewaskindoftypicallyFrench.Youknow,shewaswasverychic,butshewasveryfilledwithennui,youknow.Andshewouldbethere,youknow,kindoftalkingwiththeclass,youknow,talkingaboutthe,youknow,theexistentialfutilityoflife,youknow.Andwewereonly11yearsold,soitwasnotappropriate.

But[German].Yes,ItookGermanforthreeyears,[German],anditwasquitetheexperiencebecauseIwastheonlyblackgirlintheclass,evenintheUNschool.Although,youknow,itwaswonderful.Theteacher,HerrSchtopf,heneverdiscriminated.Never.Healways,alwaystreatedeachofus,youknow,equallyunbearablyduringtheclass.

Well,Ijustwantedtoquicklysaygoodevening.MynameisPraveenManviandthankyouverymuchforthisopportunity.Ofcourse,TED,thereputationprecedesitselfallovertheworld.But,youknow,IamoriginallyfromIndia,andIwantedtostartbytellingyouthatonceSarahJonestoldmethatwewillbehavingtheopportunitytocomeheretoTEDinCalifornia,originally,Iwasverypleasedand,frankly,relievedbecause,youknow,Iamahumanrightsadvocate.Andusuallymywork,ittakesmetoWashingtonD.C.Andthere,Imustattendthesemeetings,minglingwithsometiresomepoliticians,tryingtomakemefeelcomfortablebytellinghowoftentheyareeatingthecurryinGeorgetown.So,youcanjustimagine--right.So,butImthrilledtobejoiningallofyouhere.Iwishwehadmoretimetogether,butthatsforanothertime.Okay?Great.(Applause)

And,sadly,IdontthinkwellhavetimeforyoutomeeteverybodyIbrought,but-Imtryingtobehavemyself.Itsmyfirsttimehere.ButIdowanttointroduceyoutoacoupleoffolksyoumayrecognize,ifyousawBridgeandTunnel.

Butmybackground--Iwanttotellyoustoryonlybriefly.MyhusbandandI,webroughtoursonanddaughterherein1980stohavethefreedomwecannothaveinChinaatthattime.Andwetriedtoteachourkidstobeproudoftheirtradition,butitsveryhard.Youknow,asimmigrant,IwouldspeakChinesetothem,andtheywouldalwaysanswermebackinEnglish.Theyloverockmusic,popculture,Americanculture.Butwhentheygotolder,whenthetimecomesforthemtostartthinkaboutgettingmarried,thatswhenweexpectthemtorealize,alittlebitmore,theirownculture.Butthatswherewehadsomeproblems.Myson,hesaysheisnotreadytogetmarried.Andhehasasweetheart,butsheisAmericanwoman,notChinese.Itsnotthatitsbad,butItoldhim,WhatswrongwithaChinesewoman?ButIthinkhewillchangehismindsoon.
