Medfliestospread.

MediterraneanfruitfieswerefirstfoundinCaliforniain1975,buttheyreallybecameaproblemin

the1980s.Luckily,CaliformiahasdevelopedaprogramtocontroltheMedflies.Theprograminvolves

usingplanestodropmillionsofMedfliesoverthearea.Thatmaysoundlikeabadidea,butifsactuallya

trickywaytomakesurethatMedflynumbersgodown.

Thetrick?Theairplanesonlydropmaleflies,andallofthemhavebeentreatedsothattheyaresterile.

Thismeansthateventhoughtheycanmatewithfemalefruitflies,theeggsproducedwillnevergrowor

hatch.

Intheearlygrowingstages,thesesterilefliesaregrowninlabsinHawaiiandGuatemala.Theinsects

arecoloredwithaspecialsubstancetomakesuretheywon'tbeconfusedwithwildMedflies.

TheseimmatureinsectsarethensenttoCaliformiainhugenumbersaround200millionaweek.
