meantnewspapersthatcouldbeboughtinsinglecopiesonthestreet.
Thisdevelopmentdidnottakeplaceovernight.Ithadbeenpossible(butnoteasy)to
buysinglecopiesofnewspapersbefore1830,butthisusuallymeantthereaderhadtogo
downtotheprinter'sofficetopurchaseacopy.Streetsaleswerealmostunknown.However,
withinafewyears,streetsalesofnewspaperswouldbecommonplaceineasterncities.At
firstthepriceofsinglecopieswasseldomapenny-usuallytwoorthreecentswas
charged-andsomeoftheolderwell-knownpaperschargedfiveorsixcents.Butthephrase
"pennypaper"caughtthepublic'sfancy,andsoontherewouldbepapersthatdidindeed
sellforonlyapenny.
Thisnewtrendofnewspapersfor"themanonthestreet"didnotbeginwell.Someof
