techniquein1985.Originallyusedtodetectthepresenceofgenetic
diseases,itsooncametobeusedincriminalinvestigationsandlegal
affairs.ThefirstcriminalconvictionbasedonDNAevidenceintheUnited
Statesoccurredin1988.Incriminalinvestigations,DNAfingerprints
derivedfromevidencecollectedatthecrimescenearecomparedtothe
DNAfingerprintsofsuspects.Generally,courtshaveacceptedthe
reliabilityofDNAtestingandadmittedDNAtestresultsintoevidence.
However,DNAfingerprintingiscontroversialinanumberofareas:the
accuracyoftheresults,thecostoftesting,andthepossiblemisuseof
thetechnique.
TheaccuracyofDNAfingerprintinghasbeenchallengedfor
severalreasons.First,becauseDNAsegmentsratherthancompleteDNA
strandsare"fingerprinted”:aDNAfingerprintmaynotbeunique;
large-scaleresearchtoconfirmtheuniquenessofDNAfingerprintingtest
resultshasnotbeenconducted.Inaddition,DNAfingerprintingisoften
doneinprivatelaboratoriesthatmaynotfollowuniformtestingstandards
andqualitycontrols.Also,sincehumanbeingsmustinterpretthetest,
humanerrorcouldleadtofalseresults.
DNAfingerprintingisexpensive.Suspectswhoareunableto
providetheirownDNAtoexpertsmaynotbeabletosuccessfullydefend
themselvesagainstchargesbasedonDNAevidence.
